dMZX Forums: Direct charset access counters -> Rejected Requests -> Tracker

Counters like "bchX,Y" and "bcoX,Y" were recently added to make accessing board data through counters easier. The charset data could use the same: a "chrC,B" counter that modifies byte B of character C.

Instead of:

set "CHAR" to "a"
set "BYTE" to "b"
set "CHAR_BYTE" to "c"

set "CHAR" to "d"
set "BYTE" to "e"
set "f" to "CHAR_BYTE"

It'd be nicer if one could write:

set "CHR&a&,&b&" to "c"
set "f" to "CHR&d&,&e&"

Sure, why not. Likely, the counter would just be char_byte&c&,&b& for simplicity.

I don't think this feature is necessary.

• It is currently trivial to store a temporary character set in a string and char edit it into the char set. This doesn't cost much and gives you more powerful access to the character set than counters could.
  
• When parts of this feature get implemented, this technique will cost even less, as it won't require repeated char edits.

I think strings as (full or partial) character sets is a much stronger alternative that's already present in MZX and will likely continue to be improved. These counters would push more work onto the interpreter and not add any new functionality.

Yeah, now that loading char sets from strings exists, this is pretty much pointless.
