That looks very nifty, indeed. There's a problem with it though, the planet has no back. Things that rotate off the left come back immediately on the right, taking no time to rotate around. This should be easily fixed by doubling the width of the projection source map and projecting only half of it at any time. Shouldn't involve any extra code or a terrible amount of space, just changing some numbers and extending some graphics.

"I'm all about spatial realism to a fault."

....Incompetence is to be unable to grasp the truth.
......And escape is to run away from the truth.
It is useless to run, since the truth is right next to you.

... uh, Wervyn... (I'm referring to the animated GIF), it DOES have a back, actually. Look at it carefully.

(note, Ken may have fixed that in the time between your post and mine)

Lancer is right, it does have a back.
Werv is also right, because the back is a little less than half the size it should be. =(

This is the product of a fundimental limitation imposed to make the maps work in their primary function (moving on the surface.) There is no practical way to correct this problem, so I encourage you to all just look the other way.

Werv is pointing out that only half of the map should be visible on the globe, and thats not the case for this one. For example if you took a picture of earth from the moon, you would not be able to get a picture with north america and china in the same shot. Instead of having 50% of the planet out of view, mine only has 29% of the planet out of view, and 71% in view. (This again is the closest I could get to 50-50 with the tight constraints of map size and globe size.)

I'm gonna try to fix the perspective problem on the planet animation with out removing sectors from the animation, or changing the map size. If I am able to do so, I'll be sleeping easy tonight.

Soon as that's straitened out I will patch this thing up and link it properly.

Oh yeah, this is a pretty major update considering I am phasing out all of the planet boards and swiching to MZM's. It's gonna be messy. =\

EDIT: GUYS IT'S GONNA BE A WHILE =(

There has been a few set backs, and in general I've been EXTREEMLY busy over the last few weeks. Hopefully soon I can finish this painful MZM conversion. I did make some real progress with that planet animation, along with several oustanding bug fixes.

Thanks beige!

EDIT: Ignore all the displays on the right, this was a test board and those are the wrong displays. The acutal game will use the ship displays at this point because obviously you are still in the ship. ^_^

perspective fixed, resolution doubled, and now 40% of the planet is visible at any one point rather than 70%ish.

This screen will mostly just be for looks, when you go to a planet, you'll see this screen, and have the option of landing or leaving. Oh, and of course just sitting there enjoying the view

Orbit board is linked and working great, Now just to port all of the display robots (20ish of them =\)

After that I'm going to put the updated sensor code on the system and battle boards.. I thought I did that months ago but.. nope, still using the old one.

Oh yeah, I ran out of memory.. thats why I didn't apply the new sensors. Damnit this is going to be a pain to make it fit.

Applyed the sensor code to all the system boards, cleaned up some more minor stuff, and freed up 2 K of robot memory on the Combat board, 1 K to go on that board for the sensor code to fit.

These planets look VERY nice, I'll show the difference in a second

Both of those images were generated from the same map. You can see the second shot is a little more streched out (to solve the mystery size back problem). The added benefit is that details on the map are more detailed, I mean look at the river =p.

By the way this is all done, not planned.

Very cool, Ken. Very cool. You just got back to work, could you give us an idea of your progress as it is right now; what needs to be done, what has been finished, etc. If you have the time, anyway. I'd just like to know how far in to this project you are.

Wow, this game's development time has probably eclipsed Sivion by now...

Kudos, Ken - the game looks great (even though it's not really my type of game genre), and I'm impressed how devoted you are to it.
