I screwed up when I was downloading a ZIP file using Internet Explorer, not long ago. I think I might have checked, or unchecked something, but, what happens now, is when I download a ZIP file, instead of saving it, it opens it, which is a severe pain in the bunghole. Anyone have any advice to offer?

I know how to fix this.

Goto my Pc
-> View
-> Folder Options
-> File Types
-> Look for .zip files
-> Edit
-> and check 'confirm after download'

This is on win98 here. If whatever you use doesn't have it then OH WELL.

That appears to have worked. Thanks.

And, I did download Firefox, when I asked someone else. Did the same shit.

To fix Firefox:

1. Open Options, under the Tools menu.
2. On the Downloads tab, check the radio box "Ask me where to save every file". By default it saves everything to the desktop.

Why would you want to save zip files anyway?

So you don't have to redownload the 700mb file every time you want it on some computer?

Revvy: Well if you aren't a complete idiot, you'd know how to zip something before sending it.

But I think having winzip (or other program) Open a zip file from the online location rather than saving it to the HDD is a good idea! I mean how many times do you use THAT zipfile anyway? Usually, I unzip the contents into a folder and delete the zip, why have a smaller version of some redundant data? Unless I guess if it's a backup, which it really isn't.

I mean personally, I thought data compression was used to make things travel light, not really needed for data storage really, especially if you have versions of the content decompressed elsewhere on the drive!

So that's my two cents on data compression.

.....Because every time the download finished, it told me 'Cannot open c:\windows\temporary internet files\blah blah blah blah'

OK. That's a valid reason.

There are two problems possible! The program you are using to open them does not support the file type (No I don't mean .zip, I mean the .zip format that this file uses, just cause a file has the same extension doesn't mean it's the same format) And/Or, the zip file is corrupted.

Well I suppose it could also be a virus. ^^ I do recall there being a virus that would disguize itself as a .zip download but would infact execute some java script that would look like an "invalid zip" window while running some addware spyware and generally not so nice stuff on your comp. But then that was quite sometime ago, and microsoft probably made a patch for this problem (or you could just disable javascript).

In any case, there is something up with your decompression program, or the file. Chances are it's the file. If this is the case I would contact the website up keeper person, and make him fix that darned file.

Happy fun times.
