That's a tough question. I don't like Castlevania games (except for CV2 <3) so I'm inclined to say swords, but swords are so overdone that I want to say whips.

also i picked swords, they're overused for a reason; because they're awesome. whips are neat too though. especially if they're electrified like in streets of rage.

the best whip would be

Whips rule. Even outside of Castlevania (in Symphony of the Night, try Item Crashing without a subweapon and play with Richter's flame whip for a while), there's also the Worm Whip in Earthworm Jim, the whip from Double Dragon (which is probably the best weapon in the game), and the whip Sophia uses in Warrior Blade: Rastan Saga Episode 3.

Swords were overdone by the time Final Fantasy 4 came out.

To go a little farther down into my comment about FF4: the whole thing about the Dark Sword just made me chuckle inside because I'd already seen all kinds of "dark swords" before (Shining Force, ahem). Whereas I have never seen a single "Dark Whip" before - only a holy whip, the Vampire Killer itself.

A greatsword does 2d6, if you're willing to not use a shield.
I say swords are definitely the more awesome of the two. For one thing, there's just so many more kinds of swords. Shortswords, longswords, greatswords, rapiers, epees, katanas, scimitars, etc. etc. etc.

Voltage doesn't kill, though. High voltage, high amperage, maybe.

Problem: it wouldn't exactly be a portable weapon. I suppose you could use a battery for it, but then you'd have to lug that around. And what if the wires remained crossed for too long? You could blow the battery, and that would be rather messy.

but yeah, swords deal out more pain. whips can be fun, esp. in real life when your friend is being stupid and you have a nice big buggy whip in your hand >=)
