well, it hasn't actually arrived (hopefully wednesday or thursday) but i thought i'd post the good news.
my parents have just ordered a new computer! after four years of putting up with total integration and windows me, we are finally getting a decent computer (quite a nice one, actually)!

here are the specs (iirc):
amd athlon 64 3000
512mb ddr ram
80gb 7200rpm hard drive
16x dvd drive (free upgrade from a cdrw =)
52x32x52 cd-rw (also free =)
256mb radeon 9550 (i kinda wanted the 9800, but my dad said no, which is ok because this is 256mb anyway)
integrated audio and and 10/100 lan (i really don't care about integrated audio. heck, i'm probably going to buy an sb live for $30 and install it for the gameport anyway)
free 17" crt (i don't want a flat-panel anyway)
3 year parts, labor, and onsite warranty
and all of this for just over $900 (including shipping.)

needless to say, i am overjoyed =DDD
this is the first time my parents have really let me have a serious say in what we're getting, and they actually let me get something that'll be great for gaming =)
i really can't wait to play splinter cell at 1024x768 (not to mention morrowind) and not have issues with slowdown =)

we were gunna buy a dell, but before we called and ordered, my dad suggested we take another look at tiger direct, so i called them up. low and behold, the price had come down overnight. so we called that evening and ordered it.
due to thanksgiving, i'm expecting it to arrive wednesday or thursday of this upcoming week. I'M SO HAPPY!!!

and thanks to all of you who offered advice on hardware (and those of you who offered up hateful mantras against ati =P )
I CAN'T WAIT XD

well, there was some confusion regarding the shipping address and instead of contacting us, td just let it sit. thank God i called today or else i would've called on friday wanting to know the status and find out that it hasn't even been assembled. as it is, it'll be a little late, but not bad.

Hey that wasn't a relationship with computer thread, that was mearly a question if you personified your computer as a he or she? Like a sailor to his boat...

I had NO idea people would actually take it THAT far :D *shudder*

"IT CAME! IT FINALLY CAME!" - sid, toy story

anyway, it arrived today. the first thing i did was install splinter cell and play at 1024.768 with quality at max. it was glorious ^^
this is the first actual gaming computer that my parents have ever bought and i'm just lost in total bliss. I'M SO HAPPY! =D
this is a major jump from playing splinter cell at 640 with bottom quality and no performance on john's laptop.

anyway, thanks again to everyone for advice and everything. ?THANKS!
