Also: One of the Missle tanks in Ridley is really annoying me. Do you know how to get the one where you have to shinespark in the long chamber, carry it past a Save Station, take it to the long vertical chamber, and Shinespark to the right? Not the one above where you have to charge speed and jump past a bunch of blocks, I know how to get it, but the one to the right of that hidden room where you have to shinespark up as a ball? I get to the top, but I can't get inside it.

heh, Nightmare didn't even take three energy tanks from me last time I fought him (yet Arachnid still kills me every so often, the bastard).
I can usually defeat him on the second volley. I'm actually very agressive towards him at the beginning (until I destroy his weiner). If I were a bit more careful I might be able to do it with one tank.

Arachnid = Oh Snap!!111 I hide in the corner and beat his ass when he stops moving, and then hide again. When he starts crapping out debris I blast his ass diagonally. Last time I beat him it took two tries.
Maridia = I believe I have a savestate or save file there, but I wish I had an SNES and the game. My local GameForce sells good quality ones for... $40 Bucks and SNESes for... $40 more bucks! I almost have $80 dollars... so close =( Wait... aw f**k... $68 =( I need more money, and I might get ten more dollars when my next two teeth get extracted ( I had two removed today, they wouldn't stop bleeding until I layed in bed with a small washcloth holding the bleeding spot for 30 minutes, and then I had to eat chocolate pudding (Yum) and take some Ibuprofen (Yuck) =P), because I got $10 bucks for today's two teeth. I need to go get some items in Metroid Fusion now =D (I need like 2 or 3!).
EDIT: Could you make a video of the hard NOC power bomb tank in Metroid Fusion? You know, the one in the huge room filled with speed blocks, near the last battle with B.O.X., at the very bottom? It is the last item I need, and it is the only one that really boggles me anymore. The energy tank near the first beam weapon in SRX and the power bomb tank behind the Hi-jump boss in TRO (the other two I needed) were cake-walks when I learned how to "carry" shinesparks.

Motherbrain wasn't too tough, those regen walls (zeebites or something if I remember correctly) Put up WAY more of a fight, Ridley was pretty damn hard too.
After this I'm gonna have to go back and try to skip power grip, shouldn't be too much more difficult. =D
I have no intention of picking up any items in chozodia.
I should note, some save states were used in this run ;_; not very many... I found trying to abuse them in boss fights mostly caused more problems than it solved. Most of them were used durring sensitive manuvers to avoid picking up items that were very difficult to skip. (Etanks/Mpacks in my path) I'll probably go back and do it without SS's on the next run.. But since this one is not a speed run (most of what I'm doing is adding quite a bit of time on.) I figured it's not too big of a problem =p

Although skipping long beam.. that's actualy working out alright, maybe I'll take that item off.
I'm not certain, but I think I need to get the first unknown artifact (plasma beam) even if I skip powergrip, isn't it needed to damage the last 2 pirates on the escape?.. Ice beam is needed to kill the metroids... they don't die from missiles unless they are frozen, I think.
Skipping charge beam... might be possible.. I used it quite a lot on this run due to my total lack of missiles.. but other than ridley, I think I won't miss it too much.
I have no intention at this time of skipping morph ball, bombs, or the first pack of missiles, I'm pretty certain that those items are needed.
Long beam and charge beam are the only two items I think I can still remove and win, skipping powergrip _might_ be possible, but some of these jumps are just too damned hard with out it. =(
Also, these are all being done on normal mode, if I play this on hard, I need at least 1 additional missile pack to knock out the wall thingies infront of MB.
EDIT: Yeah check this out...
http://kenohki2112.h.../files/mzm4.png
finaly did it without power grip and look what's there XD
I'm gonna go back and get the unknown item, then skip powergrip and see if that thing goes away..
EDIT EDIT:
That was discouraging.. it didn't go away after picking up the unidentified item, as far as I can tell at this point, you cannot skip powergrip for some reason, not certain why they made it this way ;_;

It's over! 9%
I am certain at this point that this is the fewest items that you can collect and still complete the game. I tried to skip power grip, but as the earlier screenshot shows, the designers had other plans in mind.
ITEMS COLLECTED:
Morphball
Bombs
Missile pack (only 1)
Ice beam
Power grip
Plasma beam
Space jump
Gravity suit
ITEMS SKIPPED:
All energy tanks
All but one missile pack
All super missile packs
All power bomb packs
Long beam
Charge beam
Wave beam
Varia suit
Hi jump boots
Speed booster
Screw attack
Here is a list of things in order of increasing difficulty:
Mother Brain
Chozodia (w/o suit)
Zeebites
Final escape (Was not nearly as hard as I had hoped)
Ridley
Chozodia (with suit)
Last boss guy (Was consideribly harder than I expected)
Some save states were used in this run, not very many though. ;_;

10% is the lowest possible item completion percentage on the US and Japanese releases on hard mode (9% still stands for hard mode on the European releases, however, due to version differences).
But enough about that. Congratulations! I have a great deal of respect for people who can complete low-% runs and keep most of their hair in the process.

Oh, I just got 100% item completion on ZM in, egh, 8:02. The time sucks but I guess it's not bad considering I went through and systematically found every single item (no maps! w00t). Then there's the fact that my D-pad still isn't 100% broken in. I can't even begin to describe the amount of frustration I've experienced trying to do a straight shinespark and finding myself shooting diagonally.
Edit: Yay, another gallery entry. Time for sleep!

Metroid Prime
Metroid
Metroid II: The Return of Samus
and... *gasp*
Super Metroid (Got it last night, but can't play it let, due to lack of SNES System =P. The emulator didn't make it feel right while playing.)

I agree with the emulator statement, and that is why I bought just about every Metroid game up to Prime. But, our Metroid and Super Metroid finishes are just opposite. I have almost finished Metroid (just beat Kraid, Tourain is open, this is on the console) but never gotten past Maridia (bah, emulators ruin the experience) in Super Metroid.
Also, this is off kinda topic, but I really want some good food, at the moment, because my mom decided to fix a crappy less-than-15-minutes-to-prepare meal, at 5:00, and I am not the slightest bit hungry at 5:00 (unless I don't have lunch money that day), and I had been slightly pissed off before dinner. I come down after a few minutes, and start getting some of that slop, but, not enough, I guess, because she started bitching at me about how she wanted me to eat more. I told her I was not hungry, and she threatens to starve me the rest of the night. I restrain my self from asking if she wants me to be a lazy, ridiculously fat bitch like her, and tell her that I am not hungry, and she tells my father to not let me have any food later. So now I am starving in front of my computer typing this post. I hope I don't have to resort to eating Nerds all night.

I think I can do it as long as I collect every single item that I can along the way. I'll bet the major reason I wasn't able to do it on my previous run is because I beat the game then went around and picked up all of the items (not to mention only having 23 of them when I began).
So yeah, I'm going to print out a map and take it wherever I take my DS.

You have to understand -- I'm in a Visual Basic class and I've, uh, been programming in VB for about six years (and even longer with QuickBasic). Save stating at the entrance of every screen and doing everything as perfect as possible to the best of my ability really is a great way of passing time (the class is so long that I legitimately beat Zero Mission and still had time to burn).
Torte, on May 20 2005, 02:48 PM, said:
hehe, thanks.
If you saw how I played Fusion way back when I first got it, uh, you wouldn't believe that I could do as well as I do now (even though I can't touch some of the speed runners out there -- I'm about a half-hour away from the record on Fusion

Yeah, I could use some more. I'm going to buy Prime 2 after I beat Prime -- I figure the price might be down a bit by the time I get my lazy ass off my chair, hook up my GC, and actually beat the game.
As far as the emulator debate goes, I generally prefer playing it on the real system (I generally do a better job with my DS, even with my custom key layout in VisualBoy Advance). Unfortunately, that doesn't help if you don't own the system (see: SuperNES...I want one so badly). Playing it on an emulator without using any emulator-specific features (aside from the "speedup" key for skipping through dialogue) counts as a speed run in my humble opinion.
I'm find with people using save states and other emulator-specific tricks as long as they don't try to pass it off as a speed run (yay time attack).
With my lack of SNES goodness I'm stuck with emulation on Super Metroid. What I'll probably end up doing is hooking up my PSX-esque controller and using that (I tried it on keyboard but it just uses too many buttons to be fun).

I was very observant in my last 100% run. There are a lot of items that I'm confident that I can get en route to goals this time around without having to run all over hell after I beat the game.
The missile tank in Tourian requires you to either do a shinespark at the perfect height or space jump all the way to the wall (video for the second method can be found at metroid2002.com). I'm going to try to do that video now.
Edit: ARGH, for some reason VisualBoy Advance is running at 150% GBA speed.
Edit: Meh, gotta eat. I'll do it afterwards (shouldn't take more than an hour to eat yum-yums).

Two things to note if you try to do it like that: you have to avoid the pillers at the bottom (you can't shinespark through them) and you have to drop down before you get to the doorway because there are only two spark blocks above it. I have no idea how I got that on my first attempt with that method (it was certainly easier for me to do that then do a true shinespark).

TORTE: When you reach the end of the runway, charge a shinespark, jump through the door, double space jump, shoot, and THEN shinespark. It took me a couple times before I figured out I had to jump twice before I shot (you shoot to make yourself fall straight).
Now, for that Crateria Missle... crap, I give up. Spectre? =D
