I recently downloaded mIRC 5.something. It's not the latest version, and I don't
want to pay $20 to get the registered version. I'm not entirly lost, but I can't
connect to any channels. I try #mzx, and it says that it can't connect. My best explanation is that The version I'm using is too outdated, but what do you guys think?

Are you connected to a server?

/server irc.esper.net

Then try joining #mzx.

I don't think it's possible to not connect to IRC due to an outdated version, since the IRC protocol is old... unless I'm mistaken, it hasn't changed much at all, and I don't doubt it's possible to connect with a really old client.

Micah said how to connect.

Type /server irc.esper.net (or if that doesn't work, try /server excalibur.esper.net ), then try joining #mzx.

The $20 thing is only to get rid of that annoying popup in the start.

I figure if you can't figure out how to use an IRC client, maybe you shouldn't be on IRC... just a thought.

1. Press Alt+E
2. Simply the select the IRC Server you want to use from there.
3. Click Connect to server.
4. Once you fully connected to the server enter the command /join and then type the channel you want. (#[channel name])

I have to agree with RoSS though :(

err no

actually it doesn't really bother me because I have no plans of going back to #mzx in the near future, and likely you'll tire of it quickly

My way requires no use of memory whatsoever though, and afterwards all you have to do is click Connect from thereafter, unless you want to change servers.

It's not generally a good idea, specially not if you wish to keep whatever humanity you might possibly have, to enter #mzx anyway :(

well, they've pretty much covered how to connect. a few basic things:
/nick changes your nickname
/join joins a channel (duh)
/part leaves a channel (if you don't want to click the little x)
so yeah, good luck surviving irc.

dang, it's going to be an interesting place now. but at least we have someone new to play fxfighters with =)
<Tox> bah. I may as well give in and shop australia. D:

<Tox> pyro1588, I'm giving you the most reproachful of glares right now.

I have read the help file, learned some basic commands, and found out that when MZXers aren't posting, they're on IRC.

Also, asgromo thinks that I'll get banned from z2 after 4 posts. :(

mirc 5 is extremely outdated

get mirc 6.17 from http://www.mirc.com

then in the window type /server irc.esper.net

then when the channel list comes up type in #mzx or just type /join #mzx in the window

One of the confusing things about mIRC is the long string of options it presents you with when it starts up. A lot of other clients simply require the same commands Nash mentioned, and don't show anything like that.

When I'm IRCing from somewhere not at home I like to SSH in to garion and use Irssi, a text-based client. It's not a 'leet' piece of software at all, per se--like a lot of these kinds of programs, the complexity depends on what you want to do with it. For most things, /server [server name] [port], /join [channel] and then alt-# to switch windows is all you really need.

At home I use pIRCH, a very solid windows graphical client last released in 1998. I'll switch to kvirc when it matures.

Autorejoin is dumb. Don't be an idiot, and you won't get kicked in the first place.

Word of warning, autorejoin is a quick way to be abused and treated like crap, so you may want to do everything in your power to disable it.

lol sane ops.

Word to the wise, #mzx is a cesspool, go there only if you want a steady stream of consciousness and blather that you might want to occaisionally put your 2 cents into.

I prefer to go to #mzx while working on something else so I have an outlet for frustration annoyance and such.
