I already have a normal DS. I can't afford the new one. Boo.
Oh well. I like my normal DS anyway.

Edit: Yes, it's pretty much the same as the regular DS except for the layout change and new backlighting options. The lighting's great if it's cloudy outside but the sun just completely ruins it.

But Selan's right though, why does Nintendo always do this? Are they trying to steal our money or something?

if you don't have one yet buy the ds lite version but if you all ready have one don't bother.
plus on the ds lite when you put a gba game in the game like sticks out halfway and it looks really ugly.

That's not even the brightest setting.
The screen difference is insane.
I just bought a used DS a little while back not really caring about the Lite. Three games and the DS itself for $150.
Right now I have
Super Mario 64 DS
New Super Mario Bros
Mario Kart DS
and asphalt urban gt but i don't talk about THAT one because it's retarded.
This is my Mario Kart friend code

Yes, yes they are. If you look at their handheld systems, it's pretty much a pattern. I mean really, why not just release the GBA SP first, or the DS Lite first?
One thing of note, though: No matter what you might say about usefulness of the Gameboy Pocket and Gameboy Color as systems, it's worth noting that they did actually make practical differences in the games you could play, what with Pocket's screen being larger and the Gameboy Colo being, well, color, which for some games or parts of games could be considered essential. (Pocket was long ago, so forgive me if I'm remembering that wrong.)
Anyway, the pattern seems to be take our money with a basic system, then roll out the really nice version to get more money. That said, I'm fairly glad I never got a Gameboy Advance SP or a DS. If anything now I'll get a DS Lite.

1) They put the system out there to see how sucessful it is. Why develop a lite version of something that sucks? I mean that's why you never see diet piss-flavor soda in stores.
2) They just haven't developed the technology to allow for a smaller system yet.
Lastly, LOL PS2 DID IT TOO. I'm not a nintendo fanboy. Just a fanboy of truth.

It's called "Lets release this for now, and then a better one later"
It's what EVERY company does with their products. You choose wether to purchase the first or second one, you know full well there'll be a better one in a couple years... it'd up to YOU.
Don't blame the company, blame the consumer.

Really, it's not like Nintendo is the only company to, heaven forbid, IMPROVE their products. As cja pointed out, Sony has done it (slim PS2, PSone, etc). Apple has, what, six different iPod generations (not counting the smaller models)?
The bottom line is, if you don't need the features included in the new model, don't get it. If you want it, trade in or sell your old unit and get some money off of it. The DS Lite's engineers aren't holding a FIFTY FREAKING CALIBER DEAGLE to your head and forcing you to choose between buying a DS Lite and having your head blown off.
