Uhh. It won't come for a while. Like I said I still need to learn C and C++.

Don't take this the wrong way, because it's not intended as an insult. But if you're still learning C and C++, then you really have no place claiming you could add anything at all to MegaZeux.

More power to you for your exuberance and motivation. Just don't think that all this coding stuff is easier than it really is :(

That certainly is good advice. If you don't have the skills and knowledge before you start something, all of your motivation quickly disappears.

What RP is doing is cheapening my offer to proceed with development. It's the whole blah blah ANYONE can just go and develop MZX, NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED~. Although it's by no means a particularly complicated software, it isn't just a cakewalk. Plus in adding new features you have to carefully consider how you implement them with regards to backwards compatibility, the alterations to the existing code that would be required, whether the method of accessing this new functionality is intuitive (good counter example: file access functions, set "filename" "fread_open" rofl) and, at the end of the day, whether this will actively improve MZX games. In addition, the bug-fixing side of this is not the easiest thing in the world either. Quite a few of the crashes that plague MZX at the moment (not all of them, there are several which have already been found and likely fixed) are caused by the memory management, which is a total headache to fix.

While you're obviously all welcome to come develop it (MZX being GPL after all!) don't expect that the general community will necessarily accept your fork (if it's pure bugfixes or whatever, like my patch fork was some people might). In addition, if your fork is seen as 'dangerous' (concerns of splitting the community like MZXAK did), you may be actively discouraged (or worse) from spreading it around.

But by all means, DOWNLOAD the source (it's on the main page) and peek around. Make sure you can compile it, and then experiment with altering things. See what you can do and what you can't. When/if MZX gets back on track, feature requests will be much more tempting (not necessarily always accepted) if accompanied by a .diff patch to implement said features. Plus it's a nice way of submitting bug reports, if you go and fix the bug yourself first.

However, don't just say that you can add X and Y to MZX without actually being able to do it first. It's not necessarily hard (I've no doubt I could add support for rendering models to MZX through throwing the existing rendering surface as a texture at opengl and rendering whatever on top of it, but I don't see what the point is, and I as such wouldn't do it) but it's not necessarily a practical thing to do either.

EDIT: With regards to my second-to-last paragraph, I don't think having a community collaboration to the development of MZX would be a bad thing at all. Whoever is the main developer at the time though would of course act as maintainer and have the last say as to which additions are merged into the main MZX source, but that's only to maintain a sense of stability. It would be cool to have multiple people developing MZX.

AND THEN THE COOL THINGS WON'T BE COOL ANYMORE :( Also it might take up more than 1kb for a game. And then people would be MODELING (not char editing :pikachu:) things in Mzx. Also what could happen is a new person joins Dmzx and gets Mzx. Then he makes a 2d game becaues he doesn't know of the 3D function and he posts it on Dmzx. And then everyone is like "Why didn't you use the 3D funtion >:( )
Or they might be like this. "This is a very nice game *advice blah blah blah* (AND THEN HE SAYS ONE LAST ADVICE.....thing... :\) Next time use the 3D function." Oh god that would probally ruin Dmzx. I could just make a totally new program BUT then no one would like Mzx anymore. But first before I actually do all this stuff....I have to learn C and C++. Umm...

Since the release of the port I've written large chunks of code (gdm2s3m, fixing the modplug port, implementing filename translation for portability, rewrote a portable build system, ported to 3 new architectures) http://devzero.co.uk.../~alistair/mzx/. I'm willing to continue maintaining these parts with anybody who takes up maintainership and is at least as civil as Exophase was.

What would most certainly damage the community was if a nutter like Akwende (or basically anybody who behaved like him) took over the project. As long as that doesn't happen, you can count on my help. However, I really would prefer it if somebody convinced Exo to come back. I'm going to keep pushing him to release d, since I think that's a reasonable short-term goal.

Hay what's wrong with fluffying up the ol post count? D:<

Anyway... Srsly people, I think it's about time either we fork out this thread to it's separate topics (exo's ban when he might return etc, Future mzx dev posibilities, and OMFG it's "Greg") or just change the thread title to "Exo mzx and you!"

this thread pretty much touches upon everything bad around here. all it needs now is;

1. insidious to jerk off over some imaginary computer specs and spark a linux vs. windows argument
2. seven to post something. anything.

with these two contributions this thread will reach critical mass, achieving the potential to end civilisation as we know it.

Could you list specifics? It looks like a fairly well-handled byproduct of human socialization to me.

I mean sure we could just ban VinceP when we get mad at him, or laugh at Exophase when he lets everyone know his feelings have been hurt, but would that get us anywhere faster? If so I guess we had better start doing all that and more. I mean I'd be totally all for progress

my point is, you guys really aren't helping the situation. if you want to make it better, do it. if you want it to die, don't hit "reply" (or that damn "fast reply" either). gimme a break. :(

I don't want these conversations to DIE really, I'd much rather they were separated into their own threads though.

In any case which situation are you refering to? Exo's ban, The future of mzx dev, trom's appearance, or something else I missed in this topic?

GOD FUCK

You guys are making it really fucking hard to read the important content of this thread so will you shut the fuck up.

Okay, now that I'm back from my slumber into the MMORPG undead, I have a few things I'd like to say.

1) VinceP, what INCREDIBLY LITTLE respect for you I had has dwindled into negative respect, and I think you may be the first person I've ever come to really fucking hate on this messageboard. Congratulations.

2) Ajs I don't know what the hell your problem with Terryn's post was, because he was just pointing out the facts. I recognise you are a very capable programmer and I don't know if you feel like you're out of the "loop" or something, but I'm pretty sure (in fact certain) that Terryn's point wasn't a jab at anyone. It seems to me that he and Lancer have had some contact with Exo, and indeed they would be the people to see to ask about future versions at the moment, since if Exo doesn't come back, organising future versions (or organising a team to work on it) would pretty much be in Lancer's hands.

3) Burstroc, would you stop flamebaiting in every damn post you make? That would be great. Actually this goes for like every zzter apart from ando. And nedemai (are you a zzter? lolz)

4) Nash, I agree with basically everything you've said. MZX is pretty much fine; I'm sure that only really minor features can be implemented from here on, and most future patches would be mainly bugfix related. Jesus, give Exo a break; I don't really know what the split up with Siro or whatever was about, but he seems to be a pretty emotionally frail person (which I have some experience in considering I am one myself) and all he really needs some space. I would not be abject to him not coming back if it meant that his future life were better. So just lay off him, especially you VinceP. I mean, how fucking ungrateful can you be YRAGHRG I'm not getting back into that.

5) Commander Pancake/Red Penguin; I'm sure you're both just really naive, but you talking to people and saying this bunch of bullshit about you working on future mzx versions and all the shit you're going to add is probably quite insulting for people who have been working their ass off on it and know that adding features isn't like riding a bike. Since neither of you have even basic programming skills down, I suggest you both shut the fuck up. Seriously, you're just making tools of yourself.

6) In terms of what this thread is actually about, I think we definitely shouldn't leave exo behind, because he is basically the only person who gave a shit enough to spend a huge amount of time making mzx as awesome as it is today while still keeping the retro feel. Think about what mzx was before he got to it; hell, look at the source for the mzx before exo. IT WAS SHIT. He has worked his ass off for absolutely nothing, and you know why? Because he loved us. Stupid as that sounds, this is a pretty close community. I mean, why else would he do all that work for a bunch of people he'd never met? (well, some of us) I think we deserve to let him get on with his life, but if he wants to come back when he sorts himself out, that would be awesome as well. The last thing he deserves is some selfish shit calling him an emo and an attention whore. Look at what Siro has posted about him; I don't know what happened, but clearly it was around the time of a falling out between the two, and yet she is still supporting him. She still respects him I think. I know I do.

So just let him do what he's got to do. He'll figure out what he needs out of life. This whole thing is just a reminder that he is only human. So treat him like a human. Like a friend. I mean, that's what he was to us; is to us? Isn't it?
