Recently, I downloaded a very good engine that converted 80x50 (I think) 16 color bitmap images to default Megazeux .mzm image files.

I am interested in knowing how this kind of engines work...

You can avoid toying around with the MZM format by loading BMPs into the board, then exporting the resulting block as an MZM with a single robotic command.
