As the battle on the MZX language continues, I'm making a poll to see what will win! A lot of options are here

This was a hard choice for me, because I like Java and I also think compatability with ZZT-OOP would be neat, but I guess part of the reason MegaZeux and ZZT split is because MegaZeux was supposed to be an improvement, so yeah Java I guess.

Although, I might be biased because I don't know any of those other languages. I can write in Java and I can stumble through Robotic with the manual, but I've never used Lua or those others.

Java is the Soup Nazi of programming languages. There's too much rigamarole and a lot of rules that either don't make sense or are exceedingly obnoxious in practice. BLEAH. Give me basically anything else on that list over Java.

I don't think Java is possible even considering the fact that it's hardly easy to use. The JVM is way too big and bulky (remember, it has to run on the PSP and DS), and you can't arbitrarily save the state of Java objects (at least, I don't think so). Remember that you have to be able to hit F3 and save the game at any time! That restriction eliminates a lot of environments right there.

It's a VM; of course it can be arbitrarily saved at any time. It might be unorthodox and make Java junkies scream, but you could just dump the state of the VM to disk and restore it. Also, I know there is a JVM for PSP, but I don't know how much room would be left for MZX.

People need to stop rubbishing Java with straw-man arguments. The JVM is obviously highly applicable to embedded environments as, unlike basically every other language in that list, it runs on 90% of cell phones without any issue. You don't have to use the whole bytecode specification and there's fairly okay developer APIs for it too (which mostly we wouldn't need) (J2ME, MIDP, etc.).

Not that I actually support using Java in MZX, just that I feel it's necessary to point out it certainly is NOT any worse than some of the other choices there. In fact, it's probably one of the most mature, widely-deployed VMs out there. The cell phone java specs also have a freeze/thaw mechanism for running JVM tasks, precisely because most phones only have a single threaded OS and can't multi-task. That's a whole lot more complexity than we'd even need.

At least Lua's a language that's meant to serve as a scripting backbone, like you all are planning to make it. All the other languages would be pretty silly, man.

EDIT: Oh wait how are you gonna throw in Exotic and Extended Robotic? Since the former is Robotic's damn sequel and the latter is just a newer version of Robotic, either one would obviously be more capable. So how am I gonna vote, huh.

This should have been a multiple vote poll. First Lua needs to be implemented and then Exotic (which I seem to recall being backwards compatible with Robotic). The nice thing about Lua is it would provide a decent VM that future languages would compile to.

Here is my opinion on each one:

• Extended Robotic: How do you plan to extend it? It is a good idea, though.
  
• Exotic: I downloaded the source-code, it looks to be OK, isn't it Robotic with different syntax? Or am I forgetting something? It would be good if that is the case, though.
  
• Forth: I am writing ForthZeux, which does more than just adding Forth.
  
• Lua: They already are adding Lua. I don't need to vote for this one.
  
• Malbolge: Just say NO.
  
• BF: It would be very simple to implement, but it doesn't do much, other than standard I/O?
  
• Befunge: Probably not, but it is interesting anyways, just make the program a separate board, moving the pointer on the board and it can then be edited in the same way as board editing. An interesting idea, but not the best choice (unless you want to make a fork just to demonstrate this idea).
  
• SNUSP: See comments about Befunge.
  
• Other (state in your post): No comment.
  
• screw anything leave us with robotic: I guess it is OK.
  
• Java: Java is too heavy for using in MegaZeux.
  
• ZZT-OOP: No, we don't need this one. MegaZeux isn't really compatible enough with ZZT anyways. ForthZeux will be more powerful, to be able to convert ZZT games more accurately, so you can write a converter ZZT-OOP to Robotic, for example ZZT #PUT would be converted to Robotic PUSH and PUT. (Forth would be used in the Global Robot only in this specific case)

IPB has always been really dumb about marking threads as read/unread. Try using the "mark all posts as read" link on the bottom of the main page.
