Hiii guys.
So, see, I've been toying around with this game idea for a while, playing with MZX here and there and trying to make engines to use in it. I've mentioned it a few times before... I originally was going to wait until I had the major engines (the battle engine at least =X) done before making a journal, but I figure hey, what the heck. I wanna make a journal now.
And besides, maybe I'll work faster if people are bugging me about it =P
So here is my journal thread! Yay!

Anyway, this game is based off of my novella entitled Behind Blue Eyes. Mmyep. So you probably have to read that to fully appreciate it. XD Aaaah already off to a rough start.
In any case, this game takes place two years after BBE. The basic plot is that a giant asteroid/rogue planet (uncreatively named "Impactor" =B) is heading straight for planet Danika (which is where this story takes place), and this scientist named Silas (the guy responsible for giving Impactor such a boring name =P) is all like "Selanio, you must help save the world!" and Selanio's all like "Nah, I don't feel like." And then Audi, who is a total fangirl for Selanio is all like "Nooo I don't want the world to end TT_TT" and after a while they FINALLY convince Selanio to help them out.
And so the rest of the plot focuses on them collecting the components to an ancient spell that can be used to stop Impactor and save the world. And in between there's crazy antics and character development. And stuff. I guess.

And it's an RPG... big surprise =P

Umm... now for screenshots!

Battle engine (working on this makes me want to die -_-; I love how it looks so far, but it's very hard because I am so bad at this stuff >_>;;)

So yeah... like I said, I haven't started the game proper yet, just engines and stuff. It's coming along though... I hope to begin work on the actual game by next year? Hopefully? XD I'm so slow...

This game looks mad!! I love the overworld map, but for the battles you could probably improve them by adding grass or snow or dirt instead of just black space. Other than that, looking good!

The battle has a very nice sky, but like Chezzy said, the ground's too blank. At the very least, put in a few tufts of grass. Also, the water on the world map might look better with a gradient going from shallow to deep, but it depends on whether you're shooting for a simple symbolic map (it is what it stands for) or a realistic one (it is what it looks like). Looks interesting!

The title of your novella wouldn't be a reference to The Who's Behind Blue Eyes, would it?

heh, i admire and envy the graphics =)
the characters themselves look especially great. i agree with the add-ground-to-battle, though. other than that, the battle scene looks cool.
yeah, spiffy!

P.S. What you have so far looks *GREAT*. I am really impressed with the battle background and the character graphics, and really can't wait till you finish it. If you ever need help doing anything specific in your engine, or have any questions, I will be more than happy to help you since I'm in that whole "mindset"...

AAAAAAAAAAAAH

Seeing The Great Selani work on a game again... wow.

Enjoying the graphics, especially the Lufia-esque/Phantasy Star-esque battle viewpoint. Generally very Zeux-retro, a good thing. And it also looks like the battle engine is more than ATTACK OR RUN, which is always a plus.

okay okay homies
TOPIC REVIVE GO!!
Selan is reviving the thread to post...
a demo! Oh noooeeesss~~

THE DEMO IS HERE, CLICK IT NOW.

It's got... some towns, a world map (that scrolls! wheee!) and an airship.
And see, now... I'd be working on the game proper, except, err...
*fidget, fidget*
I can't get my battle engine to work ;o;
It's such a huge mess and at this point I think it's best if I started from scratch, except that even if I did that I still wouldn't know what the hell I'm doing. So in the interest of actually getting this damn game off the ground and giving it a chance at getting completed, I'm gonna just ask:

Is there anyone here that would be willing to make me a battle engine (as well as a status menu thing)??
It would need to allow for basic attacks, magic spells, use of a variety of items and running from battle. And it'd need to have a system for levelling up characters as well as spells that can temporarily affect character stats.
Please guys I'm desperate TToTT I want to make this game but I just can't do it alone!

=<<< I am making my pouty face. Pity me and lend me your help.

This looks really good, that is to say, I Like It!

The world map especially. That's a great thing. And all the stuff to visit! You should emphasize this exploration detail.

And since the screenshots are dead and I can't tell... ATB or turn-based? :I

No, T-bone, the image links are dead.

Anyway, I liked what little was here a lot. Very good graphics, except for the somewhat lumpy trees, and I enjoyed the emotion display in the dialog boxes.

Broke the pre-town entrance menu on accident, though. You need to clamp down the player a lot earlier.

Turn-based, who wouldn't?

Well, I guess I just answered my question!

Maybe I'll see how/if I could make battle engine framework for this.

Exo said he'd give the battle engine a shot, yay =)
Although anyone who wants to do a status screen thing is still free to do it. You know, like the screen you go to to check your stats, use items out of battle, look what spells you have, etc...

those GFX look pretty spiffy!

By the looks of it, you have a lot of boards planned, so good luck! The demo was neat

I liked the demo, good use of color and solid textures. Especially liked the houses and the observatory.

Only thing I'd recommend would be having the text scroll every time you press spacebar, instead of holding down spacebar to wade through text (like how I did in Kikan)

This is looking pretty fantastic, can't wait to see how it turns out. It pleases me to see more RPG's getting made!

I know how much battle engines can be a pain to build. One of the reasons why i abandoned the Final Fantasy Project and have been delayed at finishing the Dragon Warrior one lol

Suuuup guys, I haven't updated this journal in forever~
Well, anyways, I've been working on this, I swear! Just, you know, very slowly.
I have some pictures to show, though~

Attached Image: screen0.png

Inside the observatory in the first town. This is the first floor, there's a second floor above it.

Attached Image: screen1.png

The campus of Burian College~ Stuff will happen here.

Attached Image: screen4.png

An office in the college~ That supply closet probably has all sorts of terrible things in it, I wouldn't open it either.

Attached Image: screen8.png

Part of the first dungeon-sortof area, it's a forest. An open treasure chest is nearby, there, but I haven't put anything in it so far (it just opens and says "hey stuff goes here" at this point).

Attached Image: screen9.png

Unimportant port town. But hey look, the houses look different here!

Sooo yeah. At this point I haven't added any of the events or anything and there aren't many NPCs wandering about yet, I'm just kind of trying to make all the environments and then once I'm done with that I'll go through and add everything else.

Although, I've been thinking of releasing this game in chapters rather than all at once. Mostly because (a) if I don't finish I'll still have released SOMETHING, and (b) it makes it easier to get myself to work on it because rather than going "Agghhh oh God there's so much to do" I'm just thinking "Okay two more towns and two more dungeons and I've got this."
I dunno. What do you guys think?

I really like your graphical style. Recently I've also been aiming to implement this sort of style in my game, and your screenshots give me more ideas in that regard.

Releasing your game in chapters might not be a bad idea if you have plenty of self-motivation to keep up with it. It'll also make players anticipate what's going to happen next in your overall story, and be eager to play the next episode.

I enjoy the perspective on the stairs in the first screen. I think the fountain on the campus could use some depth, though.
