The fifth one down is/was the prototype for Phantasy Star IV. They were thinking of designing it like Phantasy Star I but then they changed their minds for some reason. It probably would have been a more interesting game if they hadn't, but it's still cool.

Also I thought that I was like, maybe one out of a thousand people online who know about that picture.
I'm too kool fo' skool to have a signature.

this is a list (work in progress) of all the different foods you can obtain and eat in the dungeon crawler i'm currently working on. each food affects different nutritional stats (vitamins, proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and minerals) which influence stat gains at level up. any food that doesn't have "portable" by its name is considered to be a dish that you can only get at a restaurant in the main town, and it can't be carried into the tower.

battle system design doc!

Quote

BATTLE SYSTEM

PART A: set up

battles are initiated whenever a player and a wandering monster occupy the same

space in the maze.

there are a finite number of monsters spawned on each floor, spawned upon entering a floor and they are randomly placed on the floor. no monster may take up the same space as another (could cause conflicts in programming who you're fighting/whatever). i would also go so far as to say that monsters cannot enter or be spawned in rooms that are considered SAFE, such as puzzle rooms or healing fountains or event rooms. these will be specially marked on the map though. as a general rule i think we should say that monsters are not able to move through doors - might keep things simpler.

each time a player moves, all monsters on the field move. monsters can possibly have movement patterns, could say they always turn left that way they'd always go through the whole maze, but we'll see. monsters are spawned in one of three states:

1. hungry - monster is aggressive and can be bribed - chance they'll take the bribe is higher

2. normal - monster can be bribed, but the chance they'll take it and run is lower. monster might take it and still attack, especially if they're intelligent.

3. full - monster cannot be bribed, but also may not attack depending on the type. chance monster will run away if player is sufficiently high level.

ratio of these are as such

if ten monsters:

five hungry
four normal
one full

monsters can be intelligent or animal. intelligent monsters (demons, goblinoids, ghosts) are able to be communicated with and may want gold/jewels/items instead of food. animals do not care for material goods and just want food.

no more than three monsters in a group - monsters in a group are always the same monster (char space limitations neccessitate this)

percentage: 50% chance it's one monster. 30% chance there are two. 15% chance it is three monsters.

PART B : THE ENCOUNTER

when a player and a monster occupy the same space, there is a jingle or a flash or SOMETHING and the player is warped to the battlefield. battles are dragon quest type affairs. you see the enemies lined up in front of you, and flavor text is given:

"X approaches!"

if multiple:

"A pack of Xs approach!"

you are given the following options:

FIGHT
TALK
INTIMIDATE
BRIBE
RUN

Fight: draw your weapon and start the battle - proceed directly to turn order calculation.

Talk: try to communicate with the monster. monsters who are not intelligent, such as slimes, may not be able to talk and you will proceed to battle. (green slime bubbles at you menacingly!) monsters such as demons or goblins might be like "your gold or your life, human!" or there might actually be a conversation started, with a conversation tree - we'll get to those later. for the first couple of floors, there's not going to be enemies like this. If an enemy does specifically request an item, go back to the F/T/B/R menu, so you can choose bribe.

Intimidate: you attempt to look big and scary and make the monster run away. this is determined based on your spirit score and the monsters state - hungry monsters have a much lower chance of being intimidated, while full monsters might not want to take the chance of fighting you.

Bribe: takes you to the following menu:
Pack - pick an item out of your pack
Florin - (oh yeah currency in the game is the florin) - give them gold

In the pack you can choose an item to give to the monster. this can either be the item they requested (in which case you give them the wrong item, it is lost and you fight the monster (though maybe you can get the item back after beating them)) or it can be a food item if the monster is an animal type. if the monster takes the food and was hungry, there is a 75% chance it will run from the battle "Hound takes the bone and turns tail!" otherwise it will eat the item and continue fighting "Hound appreciates the treat, but still looks hungry! Hound leaps at you!" and the fighting commences. if the monster is intelligent and wants an item, go by the same rules, but the item is not used up and can be reclaimed from that monsters loot when you kill it, assuming it didn't run away.

same thing goes for gold. if you give gold to a monster and it doesn't run, you get the gold back if you kill it. also, sometimes bribe items will hurt or kill a monster - throwing garlic at a vampire will deal massive damage, or throwing some rock salt a slug monster will insta kill it. if you do this and there are multiple monsters, immediately proceed to battle with the remaining monsters.

RUN - pretty self explanatory. easier to run if there's less monsters. this shouldn't be very much trouble for you. (note: if you run from a monster, it doesn't get deleted from the map, but it is transported to a random location on the map so you don't run right back into it.)

part C: the battle

once battle commences, turn order is calculated first. turn order is displayed along the bottom of the screen in profile portraits (like eternal poison). turn order can be calculated however you like but my idea is to do a sort of dungeon and dragons system where your dex score gives you a bonus to initiative, a random 1-20 number is calculated, your bonus added to the result. same goes for each monster (monster types will have their own initiative bonus based on their monster type) and then results are compared and the turn order figured out. a ROUND is defined as whenever every participant in the battle has had their turn.

in order for the turn order portrait to be displayed at the bottom of the screen, (profiles will probably be a 2x3 or 2x2 block) calculate the turn order three ROUNDS ahead. certain spells will give you buff to your dex, changing your iniative, so if this happens, reroll whoever buffed and redo the turn order portraits reflecting the change.

in the bottom left, the player HP/MP is displayed (might do a bar as well as a number value, for aesthetics) along the left side, starting at the top left, enemy hp/mp is displayed in the same way, every enemies hp/mp is visible, stacked going down towards the player's status display.

in battle, you have the following menu:

ATTACK
GUARD
TECH
ITEM
RETREAT

ATTACK - attack the enemy with a physical attack with whatever is equipped.

attack damage is calculated via the ATT stat (inherent strength + equipped weapon)

GUARD - defend against enemy's next attack - will reduce damage from a physical attack by 75%, will reduce damage from an elemental spell by 50%.

TECH - use a technique you have learned - can be a physical technique or special move, or a spell you have learned.

ITEM - use an item from your pack.

RETREAT - go back to the FIGHT/TALK/BRIBE/RUN menu. usually once you attack, enemies will not be susceptible to bribing and will not speak to you. this is really only so you can run from the fight. you can also try to intimidate again, if the monster has low HP, they might just run from the fight.

PART D: aftermath

after the battle is done (enemy runs, you bribe successfully, you run, or you kill the enemy) calculate exp gains

following applies

killing monster: full EXP - monster erased from map
enemy runs: 50% EXP - monster randomly teleported to another spot
bribe success: 75% EXP - monster erased from map
you run: 0% EXP if you took no damage (first try worked) - 10% if you did -monster randomly teleported to another spot

animals drop items when you kill them (either food items or parts of their body that are items (fur, teeth, etc). intelligents drop gold and items. if the monster was a new encounter, the monster is recorded in your monster logbook.

PART E: monsters

monsters can have weakness or resistances. weapon types are piercing (spears, arrows), slashing (swords, daggers) or blunt (hammers, axes, heavy weapons).

enemies can be weak to some and resistant to others. this will be detailed in the monster's file. elements are flame, ice, shock, and holy. same applies.

there are different monster types but i don't know if this will really play into any mechanic (ex: goblinoids, dragons, slimes)

This is very nice, Mr. Apol, keep it up, I know I'll definitely keep an eye on this still.

EDIT: I suppose to be a bit more descriptive...

I really like your graphics, 3d dungeon and all. A turn based battle system reminds me of some older games. Your simple style of minimap is very interesting.

Can you get anyone else in your party or is it just a one character game?

That looks like awesome. How's it play (gameplay-wise, I don't suppose there's necessarily an evaluation of gameplay awesome yet), or is that part of the mystery?

That looks fantastic!

I had a couple project dumps of 3D Dungeon likes. I could never get the engine to work solidly.

<Malwyn> Yes, yes. Don't worry I'd rather masturbate with broken glass than ask you for help again. :(
