dMZX Forums: CR2-0 Final Release - dMZX Forums

Message from the Management

When you finish a new game, demo, engine, or utility, the first thing to do is submit it to the archive for approval. (Log in first, then Upload a New Game from the sidebar.) Then feel free to post about it in this forum; in fact, please continue to do this. This is so people will actually know about your game and play it. As nice as it is to have archive uploads automated, it's not going to help much if no one knows you have a new game to play.

When uploading your games to the archive, please zip up your game using the .ZIP format, even if it is just a .MZX file. As for less popular formats (such as RAR and 7Z), games uploaded in these formats will be rejected. This is because as wonderful as those compression algorithms might be, ZIP is a near universal compression standard, and the only one that will work with the in-game archive browser planned for MZX.

You can also attach your game to a new thread in this forum. In this case, you can use whatever compression format you find suitable. NOTE: Games posted this way won't be put into the archive unless submitted to the archive proper, or unless the author states he/she wants the game in.

Lastly, we suggest you post a suitable screenshot of your submission (in PNG format) along with the game.

No. This is horrible. What were you thinking when making this? I just wonder how you can not see that this game is just ugh

so my question is: are you proud of this?

Wow, that was painful. It's good that you're trying to make your own games now and all, but did you even STUDY what makes a game playable while making this? Giving the player 1,000 health and filling the board with identical enemies is bad design. ping pong mazes and 500-tile wide platform boards where the slightest error will send you to the bottom of a pit are bad design. Bosses that take either 5 seconds or 30 minutes to beat are bad design. And it didn't even indicate which levels i'd already beaten on the level menu!

Looks like I'm going to have to "play" this game when I get home from work. And by play, I mean beta-test.

So, crap game is crap. This is surprising? There were people who expected something else? If it bothers you, you could always try to do better, shouldn't be hard, right?

I wonder how long before Giel's spirit and enthusiasm for game making is broken. DMZX is a motivational meat grinder.

Oh good show Wervyn, more snark from the sidelines, you prick.

Well, to be true, it's just as i expected, actually. Seeing your other games and it's desing, and especially how quick you made this, i wasn't suprised with this at all. I can still remember me making this kind of stuff when i was just 9 or something, but the difference is that i always made it look good and work perfect.

I hope that you understand speed isn't the key to making good games. Good games need effort, experience and especially, time. Although, i was pleased to see that you didn't rip anything from other games.

I know you can do it, but please don't rush to get your games finished. take the time to think of it, how to make it, and all that stuff. I know, i don't make the best games on earth, but i do know what it takes to make at least something better then this.

Okay, FINE

Let's all list what was good about the game, then. Encouragement where it's due should be helpful!

  • It was a complete game.
  • It had dialogue with only minor/common errors. (e.g. it's/its confusion)
  • Planning went into the boss design.
  • Enemy variety.

That said, here's what most people would find wrong. I'll try to be constructive.

  • Monotony. Many levels feature One True Tactic to get through it safely. The most obvious offender is Rodstar's level, where the third subsection is nothing more than shooting east until the current block of enemies is defeated, Rinse and repeat, several times. Doing the same thing over and over again by itself is not endearing; it may seem like it on first glance, but that's not why people enjoy MMOs or playing Counterstrike for 10,000 hours on end.
  • Annoying Enemy Design. Seekers pouring out of enemies? Enemies that explode in such a way that you practically have to take damage from them? No, not fun, and having tons of life doesn't make it fun, especially when some things cut through your lifebar like nothing anyway.
  • Bad Level Design. Level design is a somewhat nebulous trait to describe done right, but it's easy to describe done wrong. Ping-pong paths! Jump-height-minus-one cliffs! Lonnnnnnnnng falls! Being forced to fight nearly everything sometimes, being able to skip nearly everything other times!
  • Bugginess. The biggest problem is the ability to kill non-"base" bosses by shooting them during their spiels. Please have someone you know, someone NOT you, test your games before release. Even Lancy sends out games for betatesting.
  • Taking the Wrong Things from an Obvious Inspiration. It's nice that you really like a game. Good for you! It's also okay if you incorporate parts of it into your own game. We don't really care, if it's done well. That's the rub, though. Quality is the difference between a "homage" and a "rip-off", the difference between RozenkreuzStilette/MegaMari and RocmanX. You only took these things from MegaMan: the title screen, the whole robots fighting each other thing, the level select format, lots of sounds/music. Here's what you didn't take: the "beat a boss, get a weapon" gimmick, thoughtful level design (uhhh... well, discount X6 there, but still), tight gameplay that focuses on skill mixed with a little luck, enemy respawn. MegaMan is known a lot more for the latter qualities than the former ones.
  • Self-Insertion (nmiaow). Unless you're making a game with plenty of cameos and/or horrible navel-gazing, don't put yourself into your game. Simple.
  • Big Empty Boards. This is half-graphical, half level design, but the simple graphics make the large space in the levels evident. Some graphical flair, like more distinct backgrounds and better terrain graphics, would help impressions a lot, as would better level design or a smaller viewport.

Everybody starts somewhere, and it's okay if it's not at the top. People eventually get better with time and practice.

I'm actually surprised he got it done. I'll complete you for that.

Downloading now...

EDIT:

The game actually isn't that bad. Though I found it impossible to go through the game without getting hit more than 100 times by explosive.

That's it, that's all I can take. Time for the review:

Story
What story? All I saw was a typical good vs. evil plot with robots, which can be pretty decent if it's done right. I realize that your source material doesn't have too much story to speak of, but if you're going to design a game with minimal story, you need solid gameplay to back it up. Well, there wasn't, I didn't care about any of the characters. Why does RODSTAR hate the main character so much? For that matter, why do all of the robots hate him? What's his mission? Beats me.

Design
For a first original effort, I actually found the level design to be bearable. However, that was before I was playing for about 5 minutes. I thought the most annoying part of the game was the fixed jump length. It was delayed and really inconvenient, especially when you're being raped by missiles and everything on the screen is exploding. I kind of liked the creative mid-stage bosses though. Some of the levels would have looked kind of cool too if they had more time invested into them. The nostalgic Mega Man sound effects also became annoying after about 5 minutes.

Gameplay
Again, the jumping was the most awkward part of playing the game. Some of the levels might have been more enjoyable if I could jump at different lengths. But even then I might just get killed by random explosions or RODSTAR. I noticed that some of your bosses and even enemies had programmed routines, which would have been cool if more time were taken to work out the bugs. Mega Man games always seem to balance on that fine line between frustration and satisfying difficulty, but CR2-0 needs a better balancing act, so to speak.

Presentation
Mega Man.

Overall
We all started somewhere, and we've all had our bad newbie games. But just remember that Rome wasn't built in a day. Not bad for a first effort, but this game is far from being fun. But hey, you can always remake this game in a few years or so and make it really good.

Keep at it!

My Score: 3.5/10

Alright, I don't know what inspired me to beat this game, but I did. A few more things:

-Favorite quote: "Rodstar - You've gone far enough. TOO FAR!" Oh man, that's too far, Rodstar!

-The BG animation was cool in the last levels...for about 2 minutes. Did you really have to use that for every stage? You gave me a headache. Some other BGM besides Cyber Peacock's stage would have been nice too.

-"Fight, G-Mel! For the future of Denebo!"

That's all. Again, nice first effort, but you have a ways to go.

A good example: Kia's sword. The original version had plenty o' bugs and stuff, but got all fixed up in the revisited version. Maybe (with permission) i will make a remake for you, Giel. Actually, i WANT to remake this game. but only if you like so, Giel.

Anyway, just like everyone else just sead, good first effort!

yeah, this point in the game is what stopped everything. everyone was just rushing to finish the damned thing at this point and then seekers do 300 damage

either way, i'm not saying Giel should stop making games nor is anyone else saying this, just to clarify
