Ultimately if we do get the in-MZX archive browser working, it probably won't support RAR. I know there are already a handful of RARs in the archive, because I went through the entire thing checking compatibility with MZX's (development) ZIP VFS support. I'm not an admin so I can't comment on what people "should" be doing, but I get the feeling that submitting things in whatever format you like (at the moment) isn't really an issue -- if there's a strong technical reason to go for ZIP in the future, the submissions can be converted trivially..

Supporting RAR decompression isn't a huge deal (though it does add needless bloat, and where do you draw the line on compression format support?) but compressing back to RAR is not possible because the format is proprietary. Ideally any format we picked would support some OSS license for compressor/decompressor, then the whole ZIP-VFS thing becomes a possibility. I already have this 75% working with some ZIP code I wrote myself.

We changed all of the riffraff into ZIP a while back, with the exception of the MZX source tarballs.

Also, the New Game Releases forum != the archive. There should probably be a distinction between the two in that blurb (and now there is ).

Yeah, it'd just be another pass over the archive to turn all the non-ZIPs into ZIPs (and this can even be added to the archive uploader if need be). I don't think there is really a need for MZX itself to support anything other than ZIPs (in fact, I don't even think it needs to support anything other than DEFLATE ZIPs)- since zlib is already (usually) linked (for PNG support).

<Malwyn> Yes, yes. Don't worry I'd rather masturbate with broken glass than ask you for help again. :(

Right now, I think, it supports DEFLATE and DEFLATE64 zip files.

I'm fine with adding the conversion into the uploader but just be aware that the archive overhaul is still over a month off at best.

Correct, and STORE of course. Zip64 and all the other compression methods aren't currently supported, but there were no archives using these formats. LZMA contained within ZIPs is now possible (I believe 7ZIP can generate such files) but it is obviously not yet supported. This is more likely to be implemented than RAR because the compressor is open source.
