I was considering doing some pixel precise effects for the menu, but I ended up going with just some simple trig. Arcade Mode cuts out all of the cutscenes and most of the alternate weapons. If you think the text at the bottom is too dark, I'd like to know now.

Hmm, maybe you could tint the text instead of darkening it? Like. Make it blue. Everyone likes blue. Or lime green oh god wait no

I'm giving my game a couple more playthroughs and then the beta will be out! At the moment, I've got Djtiesto, CJA, and Pancake down for beta testing.

I like how the game was supposed to be done by August 1.

Quote

14:44:57 <@Pancake> also: does this game use effects that would cause slow-downs on older computers
14:47:33 <@Lachesis> well uh
14:48:02 <@Lachesis> the second half of level 3 used to cause slowdowns on my computer, which is a P4 2.8GHz with 2GB of RAM
14:48:36 <@Lachesis> I fixed the problem that did that but it still uses around 80-90% of my processor
14:49:09 <@Lachesis> I think the other levels average around 60-70% of my processor, and the bosses are usually 30-50%

The boss fights in this game are really awesome, even if the boss of level 2 seems impossible so far

The bosses look great, the levels look messy. Your random generation needs some cleaning.

Yeah, I pretty much suck at making random level generators. It's something I'll look into improving after I get ice slippage working properly for enemies. Honestly, my favorite part of making games is the bosses, and I really like to think the bossfights are the highlights of my games :]

edit: I just realized that the title screen was missing some vital information. Also, the screenshots above were displaying the Number of Lolis Directly Rescued instead of the Power, this has been fixed.

Are those levels actually automatically generated? Or did you plot the objects randomly?

You can tell that they're most likely randomly generated because the starting block is designed the same in each screen. Also, scattering a huge number of random objects around like that is a massive time suck and much easier to do with generation.

Ice fully works for the enemies it needs to, and it is beautiful. On to SeventhShade's suggestion; I implemented a psuedo-random depth first search level generator as it is simple and I have created a few in my time. This requires that I entirely redo the 4x2 block pools that the generator pulls the level pieces from, so I decided to redo the Crystal Cavern's palette and both the character set and palette from Fire Cavern because daaaaaamn.

Posted Image
I'm considering making the dark purple and the crystal colors glow, too.

It's a work in progress and I'm open to suggestions.

good job. It looks like an actual level now. Although I'm having a hard time using my eyes to scan a path because it's hard to tell what's solid due to the crystals breaking up the walls. Y'ought to somehow make it more obvious that those are walls, I reckon.

Just a couple of minor details to finish up! If Beta Testers kindly could step forward now, I'll have this thing sent in a day or two

Could somebody with a computer that doesn't suck and a screen capture program give this a run and RapidShit (or preferred file sharing service) me a video file of it that shows the whole thing play through once or twice? Thanks

What I think you should do is prerender the transitions, since they're the thing that slows the whole title screen down, then just store them somewhere. I doubt they'll take up _that_ much space and it will run much smoother for everyone

I'd been considering that but since My MegaZeux Hero Lancer-X asked for it I added it immediately without a second thought, and also fixed it so it didn't accidentally use twice as many frames as the animation needed

Here's the link again, with the new thing. The thing runs in the thing on on my computer without using the entire thing if I use MZX 2.82, but still not well enough for me to capture a video thing, so if somebody could read my last post thing thanks <3

Cavern of Avians Z title screen, video recorded by RyanThunder. Looks like YouTube made it look crappy anyway though, and a couple of bits are strangely desynched.

I'm not sure what you're talking about with loss of quality; it goes all the way up to 720p. It usually takes YouTube a good 30-45 minutes to fully upload a video, so while you're able to view your video right away after uploading it, it'll look and sound like shit.

You're right about the de-synced parts though. That sucks.

CoAZ is still waiting on me to finish rewriting Oizys's script, title screen, and maybe redo the last 1/4 of the third level since everybody (rightfully) complained about the ridiculously annoying disappearing block challenge. I've also taken into consideration ways to rebalance the player's movement, and I've been experimenting with different amounts of gravity and speed. It has a completely new dialogue engine that should annoy people a lot less.

How many chars does this use? (Also, those Super Mario World-esque clouds are looking neat)

It uses 10 colors and 96 chars, a good quarter of which are eaten up by that track split alone. To make up for it, I used it at least 5 times in the level so it wasn't a waste. Other parts of the level swap some other chars into its space, though, like a fence, and a train engine. The clouds are kept on the vlayer and copied off individually.

If anybody else is interested in making boards for Lancer's RPG, it's probably best to contact him on IRC since he knows all of the specific limitations and has the level template.

I think the game above (top down RPG/adventure game) looks fantastic, but I'd disagree about the clouds. While they would work very nicely for a game with more simplistic graphics, they seem a bit out of place in a detailed and moody game (which the above game looks like). Would like more info on that game tho
