progress update: Kom's played it and he noted that the first world is basically repetitive and redundant. But I don't really mind since it's for easing the player into the game, and you only need to beat 4 of the levels to get to the next area.

I assume this is a progression thing, you can only select one adjacent to another ability you've already gained. (please don't make the user waste points just to move the cursor back over old abilities)

I'm really ruminating over the idea of making a little inventory game but I can't seem to start because kid, job, job search, random kitten that followed us home, etc. It'd probably be set in the places around my local area (like ZOMGame was, but that game doesn't count and in fact never existed), except with the names censored and butchered of course, because well, otherwise that'd count as a cameo and I probably ought not do that anymore. I'm trying to figure out a way to make this a success before I start. By success I mean finished at all.
Also I'm never going to do this but for some strange reason I have this weird urge and/or fetish to make a game that is a procedurally generated version of my local area. It'd take some rough map data and just roll with it, or maybe even be hard-coded. But it'd be a massive map, and to make that make sense, it'd probably have survival oriented gameplay (which would mean basically it'd have to be set in a post-apocalyptic or pre-civilized time period). Landmarks and things (that are important to me) would be hard-coded as well, so to accomplish that sanely I'd probably have to go the Lancer route and use external utilities (gasp! yikes!) to generate MZMs (screaming! tomatoes!) to use as a base plane.
PS: I am never going to do either of these and this post was entirely pointless

I've opened and closed MZX three times today without ever opening the editor. I'm examining my thought process as I do that, and it goes something like "I want to have made this game, but the process of being in the middle of creating it is appalling." In other words, I am willing to conceptualize a game and to release a finished game, but not willing to do anything between, which is ultimately stopping me from doing anything in MZX. I just don't want to work on games anymore. I used to do things entirely backwards. Make a cool engine and draw graphics, then figure out what the game is supposed to be. Now I know what the game is supposed to be and it is entirely impossible to even start the journey to get there. Ugh. Sorry to be so depressing, but I am the guy that calls in to work and tells them I'll be 15 minutes late if I'm actually running two minutes late. I'm just communicating, for what that's worth. Bleh......
Looking at what I'm doing now (as opposed to MZXing a lot), I feel like I'm on the other side of the tracks now, like I enjoy using and consuming more than doing and creating. The best thing is probably to just take it in stride, move on, and see if creating and consuming ever cross paths for long enough for me to make a game. Someday I will I suppose.
Remember when this thread was all about screenshots and now it's just wistful sloth central? for what it's worth I love reading these old threads and looking at MZX history. It's one of my favorite things to do, ever. Selfishly, it has to involve me or it's sort of boring, but I extract an unusual amount of pleasure from reminiscing and looking at old images and documents from a time when I actually worked on stuff because I wanted to work on stuff. I'd pay thousands of bucks to get my hard drive restored (and I will if and when I get thousands of bucks) and I guess I should say thanks, everybody, for making my experience here so great. It'd make a great coffee-table book for me to peer into from time to time, is what I'm basically saying. Boy, this sounds sad, but it's just that my head's stuck in the past and unwilling to do anything in the present community-wise. I can still write long boring posts that don't really say anything, though.

I don't know if it's just a phase for you, time will tell. But I hope it is just a phase because the games and music you've created are very well done, amazing, prices of artwork.
On a side note, I just wanted to thank you for the music you created for my game. It has helped keep me motivated to finish it, because when I go to play test something and hear that music, it fits so well with the game and makes me feel like I'm playing a finished game! I just want to get it finished and out there so bad so everybody can play it and enjoy those tracks while there roaming through the levels I created.

goddamn i just gotta share some stuff and doom myself
this is the same game btw. i'm trying to get over my level & plot design slog by introducing a lot of sub games that sort of form a larger variety game.

If Pixel could work on a game in his spare time while working full time, and work on that same game over the span of 5 years, you can too! At least in theory. Managing that in practice is another thing entirely.

I've decided to post up an OST listing for the game to keep myself motivated. I made the BGM for one of the towns yesterday and now I'm chock full of ideas for what to do with the game.
