Been watching the entire original series. Up to episode 10, season 1.

<Nadir> mzxers don't make GAMES, usually
<phthalocyanine> they make experiences.

<Nadir> a glimpse into what could have been if mzx wasn't such a bore to work with
<Nadir> actually, i'm being unfair
<Nadir> i would have made mzx games if it was capable of running on more than 20 computers worldwide in 1998

Listened to Blind Guardian and downloaded copies of roleplaying books we used to have. Every once in a while I like to look up old posts at DMZX.

ZZT!

I replayed Cannibal Island the other day. Not Gregory Janson's Secret of Cannibal Isle, Cannibal Island. Some small ZZT game where I saw the color brown used for the very first time and contact with cannibals is an instant game over. That was fun.

Makes me wonder why the guys at z2 have never bothered fixing the naming issue. The two Islands are different games, yet both are named Cannibal Island. It's confusing. Why not call Greg's version and its enhanced version Secret of Cannibal Isle like it says on the title board?

I've been watching a lot of Youtube Poop videos by Waxinator, actually. XD I don't often enjoy Youtube Poops just cuz they're SO non sequiter, but his often tell a story of some kind (key word is often :(). And he makes use of a lot of old movies and games and TV shows, so things keep popping up that make me go "HEY! I KNOW WHAT THAT'S FROM!" It's pretty much awesome.

And if you haven't seen his Gaston trilogy, THAT has kept me laughing for months

I replayed Jill of the Jungle recently, then started working on Kroz. Oh yes.

I also started playing through Evil Sorcerer's Party in ZZT again.

I went for a walk through the neighborhood I lived in as a kid. The school I went to back then has been torn down, the park next to it no longer has its jungle gym, and generally it was a shitty way to have a nostalgia trip.

Played my old MZX Pizza Man series just now because I had seen Maxim's reviews on there for the first time. Also, listened to Muse.

On an up note, I've been partaking of the knowledge from this website which deals in soundfonts that sound like the old OPL3 chips. (Okay, it's not perfect, but it's a damn sight better-sounding than the Microsoft GM Synth that Win7 has as its default MIDI playback...)

Meh, back in my day Windows played MIDI files using my Sound Blaster Pro 2's OPL3 chip. :( I don't think we got that fancy-pants soft synth crap until Windows 98 (unless you played MIDIs through QuickTime, but that involved actually installing QuickTime, and that was long before Apple really had a clue about how to develop Windows software).

Or if you happened to own a copy of Final Fantasy VII PC, that came with a mini Yamaha XG software synth driver - nice feature set, shame about the CPU usage.

I do have a copy of that! :( It also had a full assortment of SoundFonts for SB AWE32/64 owners, so I made use of those instead.

I wonder if the Yamaha XG softsynth would even have a prayer of working on a modern OS? Kinda doubting it, but it would be worth a shot, methinks.

Unfortunately, since it installs as a driver, it won't actually install post-Win98SE. I've been told that there was an updated version included with FF8PC, but I never owned that...

Ouch...yeah, that hurts my soul.

I believe FF8 used DirectMusic with a fairly minimal DLS soundbank, so I'm leaning towards nay. I do have a copy of FF8:PC, however, so I'll check it out and let you know.

The FF8 DLS soundbank is actually one of the preferred GM.DLS complete-replacements floating around, from what I noticed.

I don't seem to remember it being as complete as the FF7 SoundFont, but it's been a while. Once again, I'll have to check (as soon as I find my copy of FF8...not sure exactly where it's hanging out right now).

I do recall it having all of the vocals for Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec, but I'm not so sure about the rest of the instruments. That being said, it's been even longer since I've played FF8:PSX (read: one month after the game came out), so I'm probably not the best judge of all that.

Here's a linky. Seems like a lot of it's built off of the PS instruments, huh.

Ah, yeah, that's one of the efforts to replace the substandard FF8.DLS that the game comes with. I did a little bit of checking, and it seems like the one that came with the game didn't have much more than the vocals for Fithos Lusec... and a few other minor replacements, relying on GM.DLS to do most of the grunt work. A lot of the complaints about the PC port is that "it sounds like they replaced everything with MIDI music" (and that statement alone makes me feel like crying, because I get too hung up on those sort of inaccuracies for my own good).

So yeah, thank goodness for projects like that. :(
