Refactored the battle engine, uses less robots now. Not that you can tell in a video. But I also redid some sprites so that they dont drag the whole background with them when they move, etc. Also, a sample of 3 different enemy groups... and of why I always test using Enemy Group 5 (klarf and mangle): They're balanced to present a reasonable challenge to a single Level 5 character. The first group shown here is way underpowered and the second is overpowered, and I only have 3 besides yet. Two of those need to be bugfixed graphically, and one is a boss and even more overpowered versus a single character.

<@Tixus> Anyway, I set the year to 1988 for some reason.
<@Tixus> And set the microwave to run for a minute and 28 seconds.
<@Tixus> But it failed to send me back in time, and I was disappointed.

I got bored of programming for a bit, so I decided to do the credits, as a thank you to all the people who have helped out so far.

You... haven't actually helped at all yet? Other than providing criticism of dude's enemy art and promising to do portrait art "When the game is near finished".

Guy drew some Level 1 enemies. I drew one of my own (the one based on a MZX character) and decided to take the opportunity to balance the Level 1 play experience. So heres some level 1 combat. Also, experience points, levelling up, and battle ending.

So. Since I can't draw detailed RPG backgrounds worth crap, I decided to go the Earthbound route, sort of.

Basically, the engine randomizes the Uppercase Alphabet characters (thus the switch to smallcaps battle font) every cycle, and then strews them about the background. A second robot, while this is happening, slides the hue of the two colors making up the characters around. The colors start out as 0 0 1 and 0 0 20 and move from there, keeping about the same distance. Its by no means a difficult engine to program, but I happen to think it looks nice.

For 4, you should save the four text char data to a string, then bitwise not the text over the randomly generated "fuzz".

Maybe but... Why would I want to go for the middle ground? Better to be anything but mediocre.

Anyway, some preliminary work on the intro.

T-Bone, as to graphics I've got enemies for the first two areas pretty well covered by Guy and Brocrates, though I do still need a better looking squirrel, and maybe some wild dogs. However, environment graphics are not my forte, so when I finish with tweaking the battle engine and get into the Field parts of the game, I will definitely appreciate any help you can give there. Especially if you can draw a decent tree. I can not draw a tree worth shit, and my game is named Autumn >.>

That cockpit looks pretty good. For your title screen though, your wordmark of your title is blending into the bottom right tree. Maybe change that one tree into a different shade of like one of your greens or browns.

I'd love to help with environmental things too. I may have to switch up my styles a bit. I noticed most of your graphics and the other dudes, use solid shapes. I tend to do most of my blending on sprites using patterns with the pixels to generate form and shading. But we can see what I come up with. Anything you'd like me to throw at you now?

Har. Funnily enough the last project of mine that got anywhere was named "Dreams"

New titlescreen, taking into account T-Bone's suggestions, and then I decided to put some more trees into the foreground of the letters instead of the background, and removed the one that intersected the M that just never looked right IMO.

EDIT: And then, I showed this on #mzx and Malwyn gave me some great palette tips, and general scene construction ones. This title screen is on like, revision 15 now.

much nicer! Palettes have such a strong impact. I'm curious what Malwyn had to say, because I have general palette customs that i tend to do (when i do anything at all). #1 for me: I no longer use pure black ever.

Nice overall progress, btw.

So, as the project stalled for a bit for various reasons (Battle engine code was getting convoluted, explaining the setting without the exposition sounding artificial was getting difficult etc) I've decided to start the project over, maintaining a lot of the existing ideas, plot, and game data (artwork and sounds etc) while transitioning the game to running on a more streamlined battle system based on a stripped down implementation of Pathfinder, as well as changing the protagonist from "Jack", the outsider who is forced to crash land on the planet, to an unnamed citizen of the planet (which has been changed to roughly 13th century technology level) who witnesses Jack's crash and is whisked away on an adventure from there.

I'm also, instead of focusing on the battle engine for so long as I was before, starting off with character creation, the intro, and the opening scenes of exploration and adventure first, so as to give the game a more consistent feel out of the gate.
