Shifting this conversation out of Asgromo's journal :( sorry about that

Brilliant. I can just imagine creating a game start to finish this way, making it in-line as you go. I had daydreams in the past of a game whose objective is to make a game, where the game making experience is somehow translated into acceptable gameplay.

Useful that MZX has some of the framework in place that makes this sort of idea fairly natural.

I have a habit of making runtime level editors to simplify otherwise awful tasks in MZX. That particular one was made since I wanted to have descriptive dialogue for EVERYTHING in the top-down portions of the game, much like Space Quest IV or whatever, and obviously there wouldn't be enough robots to pull this off given that there are three alternate world versions of the same area on every board. That screenshot actually had one of the key features of the editor broken at the time I took it, that displays every single block that has dialogue tied to it. Here's an older one that shows it correctly:

Posted Image

The game I'm working on right now has something like this built into it for enemy spawn points; red, yellow, and green trigger based on game flag states defined per-board in the WS and ST sub-menus and the grey ones are just navigation points. Not shown: a menu that lets you edit initial LOCAL counters for the enemies in the key.

Posted Image

This in turn pregenerates a Robotic program (as well as saving a data file so it can be reopened in the editor) that duplicates copies of itself that LOAD_ROBOT the enemies -- a lot easier than trying to manage several copies of the same enemy program across different boards, and also making it easier to develop enemies without even going back to the editor.

It's an interesting idea, really; I might end up adding something similar to the level editro for my game. Currently all you can do is lay out the level and place down objects; code for them has to be provided externally.

I probably accidentally implied somewhere that it actually does more than it really does. It's just a level editor that shows up if you hold a key while pressing ALT+T. Having it accessible on the fly would be great, I was referring to the on-justentered respawning paired with LOAD_ROBOT, which in retrospect wasn't really notable enough to mention... I thought pregenerating the spawner code and having it duplicate itself was pretty neat though.

Actually my comments were more in the context of the Tiamat editor, sorry if that wasn't clear.

If I did add code editing, I'd probably prefer to migrate the level editor out of MZX and into something else (Java, maybe- less work for GUI stuff and I'd want copy paste among other things) rather than implementing a text editor in MZX itself. Would be a bit of work because the level editor does a heap of specialised stuff and I'd need to have custom code in there to watch how many chars are being used- for now I might not bother.

Yeah, the Tiamat script system is seriously one of the best ideas I've ever had I think. The touch detection in gameplay needed a bit of work though. I wouldn't mind just making an action-lite adventure game based on the Tiamat editor but I have like what, 4 projects right now, not including Tiamat because it's one step away from being totally canned... :(

I'd have to say this is turning out well despite the ridiculous palette restrictions I ended up giving myself (five colors for the level, only four in that picture since one in this particular palette is reserved for the boss).

Oh yeah, all of the water chars have pretty decent animations (and that's also multi-char WWater...)

Like the water area above, this area's pretty much defined by its animations (and some other things but I'm not going to spoil them all) so I went ahead and just made this screenshot an animation

Posted Image

It's supposed to be 20fps (50ms frames) but Opera is playing it back much faster -- 20fps is very slightly slower than speed 4. I don't know what the deal with that is.

I won't call them achievements though because you get achievements for doing perfectly normal things in a game, apparently, like beating every level. You probably won't see many of them unles u try stuff!

I don't remember. I wasn't very serious about trying to complete it and I posted all of those screenshots prematurely. That's just how I was back in early 2008.

That's an odd level graphics style. It's a little plain looking and a slightly jarring in contrast with the player character. It's a mock up? Definitely doesn't fit with the previous screens you showed.

Oh! The character looks nearly the same as the one in the screen shot before (where does developing a style end and predictability begin?). The character still contrasts with the setting, though.

In about a year, I think. It's not called Rebirth Machine anymore and I've excised all the cameo garbage. It's now just a team shooter in the style of gauntlet.

Victim Complex (the better looking one) was largely based off of HELLQUEST's code and several other things like player graphics were similarly inspired by it. Very tonally different games, though. Victim Complex was sort of an awkward "more serious Cave Story" in what little I conceived of it and also the protagonist was a murderous psychopath

Alright. Kinda hard to make a 4SERIOUS game about anything these days but you have more than enough brains so you can probably pull it off (I really was trying to criticize rather than just crap on). I like the graphics style on those shots and character seems to fit much better.
