I'm working seriously on a game for the first time in several years. The public title is "Exophase Birthday Game 2". I'd like to release it on August 7th. I've developed ideas here and there over the past nine months or so and I had a false start a while back. I polished what I had, scrapped that, and started redoing it as a serious project early in January. Now I have a functioning skeleton of the engine and a vague skeleton of the plot and a general plan for the game as a whole.

The concept is "war profiteering in the guerrilla cyber-city." It's an open world only in the linear fashion of the original Legend of Zelda. There will be a great deal of shooting and a fair deal of dialog.

I'm going to need to get over myself and make people look at my broken, ignorant code and take suggestions on my ham-fisted graphics. Not sure yet who I'll arbitrarily nominate for that occasional work. I don't plan on publishing much game content in this journal; mostly recording my progress.

I hope I can get someone to do me up a few mods and a consistent theme when the game is nearing completion.

There will be cameos in a loose sense.

The concept is "guns and conversation in asgromo's wildest wish fulfillment world". It's an open world only in the linear fashion of a very linear game with a predominantly closed world. There will be a great deal of shooting and a fair deal of dialog. This year I'm working intently on putting together a mostly playable skeleton of this thing.

August 7th? Very specific! Especially interesting considering you're the type who wouldn't give such a specific date without meaning it.

Count me in for any part of this, if you think I'd be suitable for it.

I'd be willing to look at your broken, ignorant code as it'll be a familiar sight. "war profiteering in the guerrilla cyber-city" ;(

You shut up seventh shade! The concept is a good sentence and it means well.

edit: Today I've been continuing work on the first map, which is a large portion of the prologue, which will introduce a few characters, an extremely important macguffin, and the basic gameplay concepts, and plays as mostly some shit involving keys and doors and dialog. It's a floor of a skyscraper in THE GUERRILLA CYBER-CITY, which is a phrase I'm going to repeat until it sounds good.

Actually, the keyboard mashing was due to belatedly realising I'd been trolled. I'm normally cleverer than that, honest =P

Breaking things constantly, bugs everywhere, reprogramming everything. I'm new to setting up a large program and making everything work, so it's been a big pain. Still too cognizant of serious issues to show my work; going to go through probably a couple more iterations of what I've got before it's in fit enough shape to develop as a "real game". Just wondered why my player bullets had regressed horribly for half an hour until I realized I'd decimated vlayer_width. Not sure how I broke my enemy caching/loading in the past days or two of refactoring; should have been testing it as I went along.

edit @ 4PM: Had a variety of problems getting my doors and enemy caching/loading to work, suddenly discovered my basic misconception that spr#_off can be read; now everything's fine.

Enemies can no longer occasionally shoot through doors because I'm no longer forgetting to reinitialize flags that determine who can shoot through what. *slap slap slap* Doesn't matter though, because it turns out my failure to care about how robot_ids are assigned (as i understand it, a robot loaded with an mzm gets a new robot_id (for a pretty straightforward reason), so I obviously can't count on them as unique identifiers for my game objects that are saved to and loaded from mzms) means I have a lot of shit to rework.

edit moments later: unless of course I just reset everyone's identifier every load, which as far as i can tell should be what i need.

edit @ 5:30: O K i guess it's working and i can make the game now (maybe)

Been busy with Stupid F******************ing Life Events!!!! so all I've managed to do in six days is get a more concrete concept of the world map drawn out on big newsprint paper and code a nonworking message box engine and obsessively play my 12 empty maze boards with enemies and doors in them over and over again, killing all the enemies before they respawn. AUGUST HERE I COME

i wish i had done this much on my game, but all it has is a title screen and a textbox engine (which does work, but might be scrapped anyway because _________)

Worked a little while planning my first area out on paper. These days I have a muse who helps me along, it's a totally great situation!!! This first area is going to be sort of a playable rewrite of a scene from a shitty demo I released years ago. I'm getting a better grasp of the amount of work I have as far as Making The Game is concerned. (still a lot, but now it has a more reasonable appearance, instead of "infinity")

Creative block, poor time management. Fixed a few absolutely lame-ass bugs I'd been frustrated by previously, stuck post-its to the wall and then threw them out and wrote up a wiki for myself to start connecting the dots between my hideous back stories and locales and plot points, obtained a stack of useful art from friendly folks on #mzx, sorted my files into subdirectories and cleaned out a lot of gunk, had a fruitful conversation with Maxim about having to actually make great stuff out of our respective work.

I also spent a few bleary-eyed minutes this morning cleaning up this adorable little thing. It's one of Exophase Birthday Game 2's small autistic cousins. Trust me, they're related only in authorship. Give it one small chance, though!

WELL, my wiki grew. I spent an hour or two figuring out a plot. Another couple of maps were sketched out. Some graphics were thrown together for the small second area in the game. And just now, I drew a simple map of what I've planned for the total arc. Here it is, with the labels erased:

FFFFF, maybe, maybe. Although i was thinking about just asking to use pieces of Sai`ke's Shell, Creep, and Introversion for everything. Because those albums together are, among other things, basically a video game score about walking around a quiet city and then occasionally shooting down hostile military helicopters (not necessarily representative of finished gameplay).

But you do really good fucking compositions, so maybe i will ask again when the time comes. Game is still fairly early yet to have other people work on anything.

Hello? This the mercenary working for LEVER?

[EXOPHASE]
Who is this?

[MAXIM]
My name... the name is Horace Maxim. Call me Horace.

[EXOPHASE]
What do you want?

[MAXIM]
Only to meet you, Exophase, soon. You're very good at what you do, I'm told. I respect that.

[EXOPHASE]
No promises. If there's anything you want to tell me before I end this call, do so, please.

[MAXIM]
My piece sounds trite, but it is valuable. You're tough, but would disregard me at your peril: Don't trust a soul in Ridge City.

[EXOPHASE]
Of course. Bye bye.
