I implemented the download counter this morning and added the UI bits for it today. It will tell you how many times a file in particular has been downloaded if you hover over it (in addition to the proper filesize, now), and on the front page the five top downloaded games show up. Due to our previous Vault developer's apathy, the file download counter was 0 across the board until this morning. Quick, go spam downloads onto your own games before I make it count based on user ID X(

Oh man I'm so glad your on the web development team, Lachesis. This is great stuff!

Here are a couple suggestions... not all that important though:

1. Search Bar target default to Any

For the search bar, wouldn't it make more sense for the default search to be set as "Any" rather than "Title"?

2. Tags Refresh

When you add a tag to a game and click the X button, the tag doesn't visually appear until you refresh or return to the page. Not a problem at all, i just at first was wondering if tagging worked but didn't know till i refreshed.

3. Review Post Dates

Is it possible to add dates to reviews, so we know how old a review post is?

EDIT:

Almost forgot! But can there be another tag for sports? I couldn't figure out what tag would be best for like a game about hockey or baseball.

Also, for games that arnt on the top downloaded list, will they have a visible counter as well?

1. That's a quick thing... can be done, I'd have assumed most people would just be looking by title.
2. Harder than it sounds, it's been on the list for a while. This also applies to screenshots but not titlescreens
3. MZXGiant didn't store posted dates :? This would work for everything that was reviewed after I took over... it'd just show the last edited time. I have higher priorities but I'll get around to it
4. Done (Racing is still separate though)
5. Hover over the download links

"Get MegaZeux 2.83 + Caverns of Zeux" only describes the first (x86) link, obtusely. Why not include Caverns in every release? Except the source, I suppose. Also, the x86 download page has a description; the rest don't.

I think what i'm saddest about is that dmzx has basically been a sterile software project at its rare best for several years now (contrast: the friendly and talkative z2 (yes i understand the z2 portal has been effectively moribund for the better part of a decade)), but i agree that reflects on me as much as anyone or more. Seriously, though, it's all function and no fun!!1 And yes, i recognize that's not a bad thing and also that nowadays all the old creative/spastic community lifeblood, which never included me, basically shaves and works and imagines what their grandchildren will look like.

Oh, nostalgia :(

I guess the solution is to work on the wiki, haha

Yeah, what the code does (it's something I left from MZXGiant's work) is pulls the first title from the list of archs. It turns out that the first arch is Windows x86, so that's the title it pulls. While I agree that this should be more consistent, it's something that would probably fall in ajs's hands when he releases 2.83b/2.84. For now, we can just rename the Windows x86 release to be consistent with everything else, if nobody else objects.

edit: I'll copy the descriptions while I'm still thinking about it. Thanks.

While I'm thinking about it, the showcase page really needs an obvious way to show what architecture the program is for if it's not "All". Sounds like I need to add another special-case column to the sidebar :S

Been getting my ass back in gear... you can sort searches now and there's a page to view all games sorted by download count. Had to run more datacleanup. :(

Released Date has been added to the Vault! If you have games without release dates you want filled in compile a list of the release dates and post them here. Elites can do this by themselves for their own games. Dates for being added to the archive will suffice if you can't find an actual released date, there are lots of old posts in New Game Releases from when it was the norm to approve games in large batches. It'd be amazing if anybody who knows release dates for really old games (or is willing to hunt and dig until they can find them) could compile a list of those, too. Thanks!

Edit: If you don't know a field, you can leave it as "MM" or put in zero and it will still work.

DDL1 was 7/7/97 and DDL2 was 8/10/97 (My poor cat Hazy died the previous day and South Park premiered 3 days later). Not sure when the "DDL1+2 update" was made.

I guess really bad MZX game series get combined into one zip file, huh? (yet Arena gets its own file per game. hmm...)

I'd rather not risk driving any revenue to that outfit whose IPO was just a scheme to rip off investors, but yeah, technically you could probably DO it.

It would work and look like this:

http://www.facebook....Id=261583668402

I can generate the code if any of the web developers here would like to add it the left bottom column on our main page?

EDIT: It only be a few lines of code that would just be java. The CSS and all other things won't be needed.

No Java on DMZX =( the front page is written in XHTML, PHP, and JavaScript, the latter is still pretty tacked on in spots and I'm definitely not adding Java to the mess..

edit: oh I bet you meant JavaScript. Ehhhh, I'm still pretty iffy about linking to Facebook, maybe we should see how the community in general feels (poll), I'm sorta leaning the direction Lancer is

<Nadir> actually, i'm being unfair

If you're wondering why Labyrinth of Zeux and Bloodlands are now on the front page; the overall download count tallies up downloads from ALL past versions of a game now. Now that the games have had time to accumulate legitimate downloads over time, I went ahead and cleaned out some of the original untracked downloads, several of which were caused by users spamming the counts of certain entries up so they'd appear on the front page. Thus, the download counts on Bernard the Bard, Demon Earth, Pandora's Gate, Forrester, and all of the Zeux games have actually dropped a little bit.

Hello all, I just wanted to make a comment about the front page as its an issue Ive had for quite some time. I'm not entirely in favor of the layout as its very hard for me to read anything. The font point size is too small. I understand you can increase it in any browser as a visitor but I don't think its best practice to have the fonts as small as they are. Is it possible to break up those two columns (Recently Added and New/Updated Reviews) where the point size is quite small, into rows instead of columns and increase the font size?

I won't lie, it also took me quite a while to find the upload button link.

Take this criticism with a grain a salt however, as I this has only become a problem for me after my post head injuries. I have a bit of difficulties reading small text on screen. So my opinions may not reflect everyone.

I'm going to be uploading a ridiculous among of games soon.

I plan on overhauling the Vault over winter break--I'll definitely take these thoughts into consideration. Thought, I think in my current working copy I've already increased the font size, the layout has changed a bit, and the new record link has moved.

I find that the most recent uploads should be more prominent. I honestly can't read whats there without zooming in on my browser :(

Maybe where it says Featured Game above it could say something like most Latest Game? It be cool if new games had big highlights like the featured games do. This may even be some good encouragement for the developers.

Any updates about this or is this related to what theme people choose within the forums?

Please consider a font-size increase

I made up an entirely new theme by using Stylish and GreaseMonkey, since I don't like the existing ones

Although what I would prefer to have is a SQLite extension to access it instead of the web-browser. (Unfortunately SQLite currently has no way for virtual tables to consume LIMIT and OFFSET clauses.)

Hey everyone, not sure if the structure of the site is still maintained in anyway. But I just wanted to say its been hard for me to actually read some of the content that is on the front page. The font size is too small (9 point size). In the area of recently added. I know its possible to increase the size within the browser but I shouldn't have to do this. Is there anyway to maybe move the two columns into maybe too rows and increase the font size? I don't have the best vision anymore so anything below 11 points is hard for me to read. Thanks :(
