The true story behind those screenshots is that I actually was working on a game in 2.51, but 2.51's editor was so insufferable that I started looking for ways to get around it. I came up with the idea of editing boards in 2.84 and then writing a robot to save a series of 80x25 .ANS files. I used a small handful of boards from HELLQUEST to test it. It worked great but I realized I was wasting my time and I started working on a project that will actually get finished.

Unfortunately, I can't share any screenshots of it, or it will never get finished.

Perfectly understandable. After all, the demo curse (the phenomenon where an unfinished game is released thus sparking hype and discussion until it satisfies the creator such that they don't feel like finishing it anymore because all the hype and discussion has already been spent) is all too real.

I've been tinkering with an rpg battle engine, possibly for use in the BtB remake (which I should get back to at some point)... I'm going with a different idea for BtB, but I liked how this was coming along so I'm going to continue working on it.
This is using assets from a project from last year that had been sidelined, a post-apocalyptic themed monster-collection RPG:

3-on-3, turn-based battles. A lot of the functions aren't in yet, like the ability to switch from front-row to back-row in battle, using items, catching monsters, leveling up... still lots to do.

Originally, I was using a 4-color monochromatic palette, meant to mimic a gameboy game:

There's now an option to switch between several palettes.

Story-wise, this takes place in the same world as Depot Dungeons, an unspecified number of years after the events of that game.

Those look great Otto! Has a real Gameboy Color feel to it, which I see was intentional.

IDK i like the extra vertical fidelity too much

it helps a lot when detailing sprites

I cheated a bit with half-pixels for some of the icons and text, to sneak in some more detail...

I'm glad the Gameboy Color look was evident. Mode 1 is actually working out really well for this!
