So, we will need to recreate it (after the 24 hours is up, of course), but keeping the following in mind:

  • The original page was shit. It was not encyclopedic, it drifted off into irrelevant stuff and it doesn't make much claim for the relevancy of MegaZeux. Best to use the pages for similar projects as a model.
  • The original page had no citations. We can cite everything we need to, it's just a matter of being somewhat creative with the references. Sure, there's not going to be any Reuters stories on MegaZeux, but there doesn't need to be. Just make sure we have a good spread of stuff across multiple domains.

Basically, we lost the page because it looked like some random personal project, not something with a 20+ year heritage that's been developed by many people and has a massive library of games made for it. The key is to establish MegaZeux's importance and I think there's more than sufficient resources for doing that.

<Malwyn> Yes, yes. Don't worry I'd rather masturbate with broken glass than ask you for help again. :(

Note that here is what the MegaZeux page looked like several months ago. I updated it to note the 2.90d release and correct the repository link a few weeks ago, and the most recent version had a different template, but otherwise this is up-to-date.

Things to take away:
  • Description: fairly decent, but could be shorter.
  • Improvements over ZZT: long-winded and specific. This could be rewritten to a general "comparison" to other game creation systems. I don't know if this would count as a remotely credible source (2018-04-24 edit: it sure doesn't now LOL!), but it covers the main strength of MegaZeux—how quick and easy it is to have a working prototype of a game.
  • History: no one cares. This could be a couple of short paragraphs. These details are interesting to long-time MegaZeuxers and no one else. Most of the features that make MZX remotely relevant today are in a short bit near the end of this section. A short section (paragraph at most) about the scripting language is probably called for, but nothing else; anyone who wants to know this stuff will be on DMZX reading the help file or wiki or watching Graham's videos.
  • Day of Zeux: no one cares. The last one was at the start of 2014. Because of the lack of these, they have little to no relevance to anyone trying to pick a GCS. These should have been a sentence or two at most when they even were happening; now, maybe a passing mention in history.

Here's another GCS's page on Wikipedia.

  • Screenshots: The MegaZeux page had absolutely nothing showing off what MegaZeux looks like. OHRRPGCE's page has a picture showing off the visuals of what looks like several different games.
  • Timeline: Wow, they had almost as big a release gap as MegaZeux! Not sure we need something like that, but wow, if it's part of the reason this page hasn't been deleted yet, whatever works.
  • Comparison with other game engines: Essential, but MegaZeux's page had almost nothing of the sort.
  • References: lol

Other thoughts: references from any of the times MegaZeux games got featured on indie game blogs. Mention any notable Internet names who were or are MZXers.

Also, "personal project" when the game has gone through something like a dozen devs over 23 years lol

Needed more citations and direct quotes from those sources. That's what I think might have been the issue.

I registered because I noticed the Wikipedia page was down. If anyone is serious about resurrecting the page with sufficient citations, I have a few links to cite:

Succeeding Megazeux (EDIT: Oops, already mentioned. Well, this was the page I was reading right before I decided to check the Megazeux wikipedia page.)

Pixelmusement's Megazeux page

RPS Article Live Free Play Hard mentions "I’m trying to articulate why MegaZeux/ZZT games are so interesting to play."

Megazeux GoodOldDays.net entry

I thought I'd easily be able to find a lot more than that, but some of the pages I thought I remembered were actually wikis or videos or technically about ZZT and so on. (ZZT's page is much better than the old Megazeux page, which is why it's still up.)) There's mention on HardcoreGaming101 of someone wanting to write about Megazeux a few years ago, but evidently they didn't get around to it.

Welcome, and thanks for posting those links! The MZX development team is interested in replacing the article, but if any of us wrote a new one it'd pretty much reinforce their "personal project" complaint (so we haven't). Outside of that there's been some interest but I don't think any active work has been done on it. If you're interested in trying to revive interest in replacing the Wikipedia article, the MegaZeux Discord server might also be a good place to talk about it.
