Waaaaay back, well before I came to dmzx, that was the origional plan, the game wasn't supost to have any plot, no planets to explore. Just hard core fighting fun. I planed the player to have about 12 ships at his disposal to tackle various enemys. However as the course of the game shifted to from a stratigic combat simulator to a space exploration game, it became inpractical to field multiple ships. To combat this I greatly upscaled the upgrades section for your ship. So if you want a fast ship, buy the best engines. if you want an all out slug fest, mount the biggest lasers/missiles/cannons. If your looking to mine for profit, fill your ship up with cargo pods and landers.
In additon eliminationg multiple player chassis gave me a large amount of board space to play with, that ment I could convert the enemy damage display to custom blocks (from robots) which saved like 10 k of robot mem, which allowed me to add in everything from critical hits to shield arcs. (also it just about doubled the playable area in combat.)
And I don't know what calen's talking about! I swear there were no demos! he's full of it!
