This will be my journal for when i eventually start a project. I'm thinking of doing something a bit like the old Gauntlet series once i relearn megazeux. In the mean time, though, what i can i do for you?

I want to help anyone that would like my assistance on a megazeux project of any kind. I can't code for shit but i can write, edit, do graphics, and make maps. Any tedious grunt work you don't wanna do, i can do.

I'd rather see more projects finished than egotistically stick to solely my own efforts. I ask for nothing in return except a mention in the credits.

I've never worked with anyone before on anything. I've always worked on my own and so gone at my own pace and such. But I'm getting really serious about finishing my game and having another perspective might benefit the game tremendously. It needs a lot of work still and so I'm sure you could lend a hand if you are serious. It might be the thing I need to actually finish it.

What time zone are you in? I'm on pacific time. We could IM later and discuss details of possible collaborating if you want to. We'all need to go over what I want the game to be, ultimately. I'm very into coding and graphics, not as much into the rest, TBH so it sounds like we'd work well together.
Currently working on Servo for MegaZeux, I hope to complete it by the middle of 2015? Who knows...

I'm thinking about making a ZZT-inspired game in MZX. If I get it done, I can send you a beta copy, so that you can provide feedback if you want.
I'm too kool fo' skool to have a signature.

Ok, you're two hours ahead of me. What time do you usually go to bed? We could chat tonight if you aren't busy? I'll have my son to bed by 8, 10 for you if that's not too late?

asgromo and I have a game that might be ready for beta testing within a few weeks if you're interested! that's all I've got right now.

edit: a question though; have you played HELLQUEST? if not, then great, because we'll definitely need an opinion from someone who hasn't played it.

<Nadir> mzxers don't make GAMES, usually
<phthalocyanine> they make experiences.
<Nadir> demos, more like
<Nadir> a glimpse into what could have been if mzx wasn't such a bore to work with
<Nadir> actually, i'm being unfair
<Nadir> i would have made mzx games if it was capable of running on more than 20 computers worldwide in 1998
<Nadir> >:D

<%Alice> functor
<%nooodl> i hear C++ has a thing called functors and they're completely different from Haskell functors...
<rorirover> the result is the most horrid thing in C++, it's basically black magic and it transforms any code you're writing into some eldritch monstrosity

Graham, sorry I missed you last night. Usually 9 pm as I have to get my kid to the bus stop in the morning.

Lachesis, I'll beta test. Not sure I want to play hellquest...

Well, our game is basically just another HELLQUEST, so if you're not interested in that, that's fine too

Alright I'll try hellquest. But that game in your journal doesn't look like hellquest.

That's fine, I figured it was something like that. So how much time/energy do you want to put into someone else's game anyway? I could just fill you in on game style/layout and you could do some level design for me. do you like creating or solving puzzles? these are 2D side-scrolling action style puzzles involving using abilities in unique ways. there are many side-scrolling tropes employed here like jumping & running around obsticles, carrying things (there are some stacking puzzles), shooting things, etc. Interested in helping with any of that?

When it comes to beta testing I will need help with that too and if that's more your thing, I understand.

How much coding skill is required to build levels. Your game is in smzx mode. Does that mean I have to fiddle with the code or something to alter the palette? I can build puzzles. I was working on a method to procedurally generated push block puzzles before I quit megazeux the last time.

Actually what I had in mind was level design outside of megazeux. You'd design a level in the method of your choice then give me the plans and I would built it and execute it.

You would want to become familiar with the game to understand the parameters you'd be working in so we'd need to go over some things and you'd probably want to play some of what I've designed to get an idea.

This is probably not just a simple task as it requires some specific things that need to be done in order to do a level.

Still sounds feasible. I'll paint the levels as wall sized murals and mail them to you. Or just use Gimp.

Hellquest is basically spider tidal waves and me getting killed by my own fireballs at this point.

yeah that game sucks and also i need a tester with minimal exposure to its """"""story"""""" (the new game's story needs to make sense both in context and out of context of the first game and we can't gauge the latter if everyone's played it)

if you're in spider sector you probably get the general idea of the game by now and haven't reached anything important, which is OK

I'm working on a 2D ascii art version of Doom that's sort of a deliberate throwback to classic megazeux games, albeit with a few modern touches. The reason i've decided to remake a game is that this game initially started out as a game made for out last BKZX which had the theme "shitty remakes." I wasn't able to finish participating, so I decided to make my game into a non-shitty fully fledged megazeux game. I've got all the weapons, enemies, and power ups done and I've started building levels. Not sure how long it'll take me to get finished. Building levels is taking a really long time. Here are some screenshots.

(for some reason, I can't use the image extension on this board so I had to put the images in link form)
