Java's sound is actually quite sufficient and easy to use, at least if you're trying to make your own audio streams. If you're playing multiple samples though, expect some of them to lag.
It's also possible to render a monkey head in software with phong shading + specular reflection at ~80FPS on this 1.66GHz laptop if you know what the hell you're doing (Java itself is actually quite fast but it also provides plenty of slow ways of doing things).
Seeing as nobody's going to touch GigaSuck with a barge pole (until it has its own editing tools, at least -- you actually use it like you're programming assembler on a typical 8-bit console, despite using Lua), I should at least consider making a decent Python/PyGame framework.
