After noticing how powerful Bolan's PalMaster SMZX palette editor was, I spent the day hacking it to facilitate my own purposes. What I came up with turned out to be pretty neat, so I'm releasing it. I've added a number of features to the editor to speed the process of making a SMZX palette, including:

-Smoother cursor movement
-Clipboard preview
-Extra clipboard color for filling areas quickly
-New color value editor to facilitate quick value changes
-SMZX mode 2 preview
-Some new "test" gradients"
-Slightly more descriptive/aesthetic interface

Time to upload a fix already: this one should be less unwieldy.

Damn, again. Sorry to keep doing this, this should be the last one. The previous version had a small glitch, but after fixing it I added in a couple new features to accelerate things further:

-Add/decrease all values option added
-[Shift+]R/G/B/A now accessible from quick edit as well
-Interface rearranged slightly
-Less unwieldy again, should be perfect now

Whew, ok... I thought about it for a while and added in a few last features and caught one last glitch. Seriously, this is the last time I'm going to do this. I suppose I should mention that I got permission from Bolan to release this, anyway.

I'm hoping that this utility makes editing SMZX palettes easy enough that SMZX becomes less of a niche thing.

-Copy/paste movement smoother
-New file option/blank template palette added
-Filename display added, interface finalized

e: Also, loading can be canceled, so pressing "L" won't instantly mean the end of your palette.

Sorry...! This is the version I want in the archive, though; I added a feature that I think is important.

-Color value slider views
-Interface changes again...
-Made some semblance of a real text file
-Blank palette now has just enough colors to not blank any menus

Nifty. I only have two problems with the interface...
1. The spacebar is a little too sensitive
2. The shift button slows up MZX a bit on my ancient computer.

You know what would be neat to add in to PalMaster? A char editor. I could probably make one without too much difficulty if I knew what the counter names for the colors were.
<Nadir> mzxers don't make GAMES, usually
<phthalocyanine> they make experiences.
<Nadir> demos, more like
<Nadir> a glimpse into what could have been if mzx wasn't such a bore to work with
<Nadir> actually, i'm being unfair
<Nadir> i would have made mzx games if it was capable of running on more than 20 computers worldwide in 1998
<Nadir> >:D

<%Alice> functor
<%nooodl> i hear C++ has a thing called functors and they're completely different from Haskell functors...
<rorirover> the result is the most horrid thing in C++, it's basically black magic and it transforms any code you're writing into some eldritch monstrosity

Here's a version that addresses those concerns.

Also, you can use right shift now, as well!

Can you tweak it so when pressing Shift+Space one can enter r/g/b values by hand? Values lower than 0 and higher than 63 would be clipped to their respective values.
There are no impossible things, there is only lack of skills.

Society consists mostly of jerks. We cannot neglect their involvement into building our civilization - without them we
wouldn't have such wonderful inventions like war, money, drugs... or Microsoft Windows.
