Update:

Bug squashing progressing nicely

New custom save/load screen fully implemented this is before it was working, but you get the idea http://kenohki2112.h.../datascreen.bmp

Its actually not that bad. It was only a couple MB zipped last I checked. A lot the data is reundant or easily compressable.

You are forgiven <3

If I did the math correctly I think each save game is larger than the actual game files.

How big is a quarter million counters btw?

Depends on their name sizes... it's probably pretty big... I mean... each counter is a 32 bit long, and you got a string of variable length for each counter. so you got (4bytes + (average_counter_name_length)).25million = TOO GOD DAMN MUCH! D:<

I blame the ammount of counters you have there, I mean DAMN man, do you think some of thoes variables could have been on the fly calc'd? Damn.

I mean that's a MEGABYTE of counter values alone.

+98% of the counters are 11-14 characters. Average of all names probably 12.5-13 chars.

By volume almost every counter in the game is generated durring play, the majority of which are used to track exposed minerals on planets..

5 counters per mineral, up to 255 minerals per planet, up to ~250 planets.

And thats just minerals =\

Yeah take it from me, once it's functional, DON'T FUCK WITH IT D:

It's only mzx it's good enough if it's functional and fun, you don't need to make it SUPER BETTER.

It's always wanted! However, with a project like this it's best to get things presentable first and great later. Make a "Plus Version" or something after you get a version out without all of the desired bells and whistles.

Just put the finishing touches on the new planet surface random generator! Special thanks sai'ke lancerx and logicow who pitched in with tons of pro tips to get this completed.

Not drawing these hundreds of maps by hand will save incredible amounts of time! Actually at this point I could choose to have the player explore a completely randomly generated universe. I ran into a bunch of snags getting my lines to work for the pixel:pixel stuff, but it's almost totally together and replacing the old code nicely, If nothing else the multiple revisions to these boards has made them very modular and much easier to rewrite large chunks of code without breaking everything else on the board. In addition to combat this change will (probably) allow for up to 4 total ships (including the player) to participate in combat, the only concern with this is if I can reconfigure the interface to support the code that's already written. To those of you who played the combat demo (if I recall correctly most people really enjoyed it) you will be pleased to know that it's now going to be FAR better looking. =)

Hahaha why did I write this part?
There is a TON of work that still needs to be done on the combat board.

318K counters for just minerals. Nice job there. How much memory does task manager report your game taking? :p

Couldn't you have made a table of possible mineral values and then had each mineral contain ONE counter that refered to an entry in the table? I'm SURE you have more than a few duplicates.

A 5 dimensional array to store the counters would in fact be much much larger, containing ~1,000 times or more redundant information. It's been tested on some 400mhz pentium's that handled it just fine. If you're concerned about performance set your guns on the pixel perfect engine, since every background object moves around the player there are a ton of active pixel perfect objects that have caused slowdown on my 2.26ghz. I've already cut the board size to reduce the lag, and as for now I intend to offer some detail level options for the player on release to make the game more enjoyable.

the whole point of a database is to remove the redundancies with pointers that point to the items they would otherwise be redundant of....

:p you are off base.

Also pixel perfect is blargh... :D

Enemy missiles are finaly back in the game (and of course pixel perfect) for the first time in like 2 years. The multiple target idea went off without any trouble, The combat board is NOT finished yet, but all thats left at this point is transfering the actual mechanics behind the combat system. I'll be considering a new demo of the combat engine once it's all put together so keep an eye out for it.
