Message from the Management

When you finish a new game, demo, engine, or utility, the first thing to do is submit it to the archive for approval. (Log in first, then Upload a New Game from the sidebar.) Then feel free to post about it in this forum; in fact, please continue to do this. This is so people will actually know about your game and play it. As nice as it is to have archive uploads automated, it's not going to help much if no one knows you have a new game to play.

When uploading your games to the archive, please zip up your game using the .ZIP format, even if it is just a .MZX file. As for less popular formats (such as RAR and 7Z), games uploaded in these formats will be rejected. This is because as wonderful as those compression algorithms might be, ZIP is a near universal compression standard, and the only one that will work with the in-game archive browser planned for MZX.

You can also attach your game to a new thread in this forum. In this case, you can use whatever compression format you find suitable. NOTE: Games posted this way won't be put into the archive unless submitted to the archive proper, or unless the author states he/she wants the game in.

Lastly, we suggest you post a suitable screenshot of your submission (in PNG format) along with the game.

Last update to post: Oct. 13 2010, 1:12AM PST. Fun fact: Oct. 13 is tangentially relevant to my member title!

Unless I'm mistaken this should be the same as the vault version. There's a small chance the .mzx file is called rd3_exp.mzx in that version and not in this one, but I think that's the only difference.

Enjoy, y'all. I had lots of fun making this thing and I hope everyone has fun playing it. Per CJA's suggestion there is now a character who can actually shoot things at a distance. Also, swords are now easier to hit stuff with. And there's another character whose attack style is...unique. Play it to find out what the heck I'm talking about!

There are also a bunch of side-shafts that you can take in certain areas. These side-quests advance the main-quest and provide a slight break from the game's usual structure. That doesn't mean they're easy, but hopefully they provide some variety.

There's a not very noteworthy glitch which was that under certain circumstances you could 'drop' into one of the falling blocks that was done falling which I think could result in massive death lulz if it let you drop down twice...but that's a VERY unlikely setup to find or to follow through on. At any rate I haven't tested the patch in-play, but it's very unlikely to occur in-game. Saying this on the off-chance someone actually runs into it. Most people shouldn't.

One noteworthy non-glitch is that the Grinder could be generated in an unpassable fashion. I'll post a patch .mzx but quite frankly I don't expect anyone to take that patch into account for the purpose of vault reviews.

There's also some slowdown, and a miniscule chance of collision miss with the gun.

Please do feel free to share funny death stories or favorite accomplishments, just like with the prototype thread. Game should be going up on DigitalMZX shortly so get it here or there, just get it somewhere, play it, and let me know what you think. Funny death stories, favorite accomplishments and complaints about difficulty will be collected for its page on my personal site (and tips for survival, mine or others', so if you have some please do share.)

Pease know that making this thing doesn't mean I'm awesome at it. It's hard, and I pretty much suck at it, too, and most of the time when I don't it's because I've played the thing so much already. This game will punish you for your mistakes in an effort to help you learn from them (indeed, it does that to me!) So if you're wondering about why you're still working to get past floor twelve...It's the game, not you. The following screenshot shall serve as proof that I've failed at least once, though I've posted proof on IRC and the prototype thread before.

MZXGiant approves...for the archive at least!

After downloading either of those, I recommend this patch which keeps the Grinder from being unpassable and extends the spinning saws the proper number of sections (again, I don't expect anyone reviewing on the Vault to take this patch into account as of this writing, but I figure it could be good for people to have anyway.) As of now this patch should also keep the manor from being unpassable and allow you to press V to die if you're in a "stuck" situation.

also, youtube video in case the screenshots aren't enticing enough:

Also, next time my procedure is 'final draft' thread release, followed by vault upload.

Important patch .mzx now added to main post. Only affects Grinder side-shaft and the occurrence of what it fixes is probably pretty rare anyway, but give it a download. I don't expect anyone reviewing on the Vault to take it into account, though.

Yet another important patch .mzx. This one also lets you press V to lose if you find yourself in a situation that is literally a "stuck" situation. Find it in the main post.

Next time I do release thread first, vault upload second.

One more version is coming. When it's done expect a proper v2.0 to be uploaded which will contain some bug-fixes and new characters, and a couple new options.
