Alrighty.

It's been a long time since I've even touched MZX, let alone tried to make anything with it. And I decided that I want to get back into making games e.t.c.

So, I've started again on a project I began quite a while back. I lost the original game so I had to start from scratch, but I this is a good thing as the code is a lot better this time around.

Sokoban, also known as Box World, is a simple puzzle game where you must complete levels by covering all of the circles on the floor with boxes. You can push one box at a time, but you cannnot push more than one box nor can you pull a box.

I am basically re-making this game for MZX, as a small project for me to work on so that I can re-learn robotic.

Here are a couple of screenshots (cropped):

A demo will be coming shortly; I just need to finish coding the boxes and make a quick title screen.

Looks like a neat little puzzle game.

Okay, here's the demo.
2 levels, very quick and basic, mostly just letting people have a quick play around with the engine and whatnot.

A few things to note;
  • Arrow keys for movement.
  • R = "Reset" - if you mess up, press this to reset the boxes to their original positions.
  • If you download the demo, please comment.
  • If you find any bugs/glitches e.t.c., PLEASE post about them here.

Also, thanks to Logicow, CJA, Koji, and Insidious for helping me. I can't believe how much robotic I had forgotten - these guys gave me a hand when I was stuck.

Now go forth. Download. Comment. Enjoy.

Pretty good, but the music really struck me as odd. You need something more upbeat and happy, like your main character is.

Also, how about a "Moves" counter, where if you beat so many moves you get a bonus or something?
Need a dispenser here.

Yeah I'm thinking about possibly making a moves counter... depends if I can be bothered or not.

Also, I want the game to have a sort of minimalistic Japanese feel to it, so I've been working on changing the character char to match the music e.t.c.

I've also made a custom (but simple) font and am going to edit the palette.

Thanks for the feedback.

Okay, so I decided that I wanted to use a custom font in my game... but I was too lazy to import one. So I made a new one just for this game.

This is it, actual size:

And here it is again, blown up 2x so you can get a closer look:

I know similar fonts have been made before but I like this one. Uppercase and lowercase are the same, all special symbols have also been edited. All characters are a maximum of 5px by 5px. Let me know what you think.

Note: I did this after uploading the demo version, so the demo just has standard MZX font.

6 downloads and one comment... plus no comments on the font, apart from people I linked to this thread on IRC.

Please people, feedback is appreciated.

I had never played or even heard of Jello until you just said that Chezzy, but your post intrigued me. So, I downloaded Jello, and you're right, the fonts are remarkably similar!

EDIT: Lol I just realized my screenshots are missing the "W X Y Z" chars. Oh well.

Every font is more or less going to look the same at 5x5 pixels. It's the minimum size for distinguishable letters. =P

Yes and no.

1) It was 1x1 char, not 2x2, therefore you weren't pushing boxes, you were pushing... rectangular crates.

2) It had a bunch of extra things like keys and locks.

3) It had its own level designs; my clone has the same level designs as real Sokoban.

Bumping this as I've redownloaded the demo and have started working on this project again. Not to create an amazing game or anything like that, just to get used to MZX again.

Last night I coded a moves counter that checks relative to the character for boxes/walls so that it doesn't increase if you press in a direction when your way is blocked.

That's about all for now.
