what about rpgs and puzzle games, for a start
and "adventure" is extremely vague and can mean anything
anyway i like anything depending on what kind of mood i'm in as long as it's good

Top-down shooters are decent if done well; multiple weaopn systems are fairly easy to create, and really add a lot to these kinds of games. Shooting and bombing gets old pretty quickly.
Sidescrollers are very much a hit / miss genre with me; I find sidescrollers that are a) too frustrating, b) too awkward (unnatural jumping etc) and c) just not fun a chore to play. Sadly, I've seen very few sidescrollers that I actually enjoy. For a start, a sidescroller is one kind of game that honestly NEEDS to have 2x2 characters to improve playability, and even then some games with this (such as T-Bone's SM4MZX) are painful to play because the control is so awkward.
Adventure games / RPGs I really enjoy when they are done well, but dislike when they aren't.

<Malwyn> Yes, yes. Don't worry I'd rather masturbate with broken glass than ask you for help again. :(

Comedy games are good, but like I said, I'm not talking about a "fart jokes" game, I mean something with either a lot of personality to it and good characters, a cameo game with in-jokes that don't seem too in-jokey, or a really well done "parody" game, like Es and Tixus's THE NEW BEYOND THE ETERNAL HORIZON WEIRDLAND CHRISTMAS or whatever it's called. I wouldn't reccomend for anyone to attempt the latter, because games that pull it off without being annoying are one in a million, and even then there'll be a few people who hate it.
Adventure games are fun, but they require a good plot and good characters. Unless it's something sort of like some ZZT adventures, like Kudzu, where there's little-to-no interaction with NPCs and no real plot except "here are some puzzles, solve them" an adventure game need to not only have good puzzles and gameplay, but an interesting plot and characters who don't seem annoying or boring, so the player actually has a reason to continue on. Games like Kudzu that don't really have either of these survive on atmosphere, and while it's hard to pull off, a few games can do it.
But for an adventure game to usually work, the plot needs to be something that hasn't been seen before in a bunch of other games, it can't be horrible cliched. Also, the characters, especially if it's a game based around talking to people and all that, need to be likeable. Even the villians and antagonists should be likeable, not as in "what nice guys
And yeah, that's basically how I feel about those three types of games. I like them all (although I voted action since an addictive, easy to get into action or puzzle game is probably the type of game I'll spend the most time playing) but as long as they're GOOD games of that genre. And I just mentioned what I think makes each of those games good.

If it is not: Beat 'em Up.
If it is relating to any type of game: Puzzle.

NO SERIOUSLY though, the choices in this thread reek. I give it this:
