As to pirating, it depends. If the game in question is not being sold anymore, I've no problem with it. If it's only available as an English fan-trans, I'm also okay with it. If it's a new game, I usually buy it. If it's a piece of useful but ridiculously-priced software (Flash, Photoshop, Visual Basic,) I have no qualms about it because I wouldn't by the friggin' thing anyway. I mean, how in the bleep could VB cost $1079 to produce? I refuse to believe that these prices are anything more than obscene markup. Put THAT in yer pipe and smoke it, Bill!

Oh, those bleeping software engineers... silly bleeping software engineers.
Anyway, a simple economic equation that is pretty obvious is:
(units sold) x (price of unit) = (total money collected)
Now, for a game, units sold is going to be a very high number. When you have something like visual basic, which is going to sell a lot less than a game, you have to balance the equation out somewhere, which leaves us two choices: price or earnings. Which do you think is going to be changed?
Also, the reason why companies like Microsoft can legitimize prices like that is because their target audience is not a consumer, but a company. Companies are the ones who usually end up paying for software like that. Business software is always expensive because it CAN be. A normal consumer would rarely fork over $1000 for a single piece of software, but a business could.
