<@Tixus> Anyway, I set the year to 1988 for some reason.
<@Tixus> And set the microwave to run for a minute and 28 seconds.
<@Tixus> But it failed to send me back in time, and I was disappointed.
<Insidious> Tixus accidentally microwaved the 80s
<Insidious> that is my takeaway from this

Either that, or the controls are more uncomfortable than the game play is...
This is like N64 Z button adaptation all over again!!!

The problem is, that it is lacking in a few unnoticable principles:
Norman's Design Principles
Norman specifies five basic design principles:
Visibility
Mappings
Affordances
Constraints (Forcing Functions)
Feedback

Hmm, interesting site. I think I'll bookmark it.
Visibility - Bungie did a good job of making sure that you know exactly what to do, in the form of nav points and Cortana's verbal instructions.
Mappings - Halo's control settings are pretty standard as far as console first-person shooters go. While they don't offer a whole lot in terms of customization they are certainly adequite, and I'm one of the people who think that FPS games just work better on the PC (Halo certainly proved me wrong in that regard).
Affordances - As in most first-person shooters, Halo keeps this simple -- weapons are for shooting and switches are for switching.
Constraints - Halo doesn't allow the player to go where they shouldn't for the most part. Believe me, I've tried to beat the system as much as I could. Probably the worst thing I've done was take vehicles where they weren't meant to be taken. The best example I can think of was when my friend and I managed to get a Ghost into a cramped base. Yes, hilarity ensued.
Feedback - Halo provides feedback in the form of cut-scenes, verbal confirmation (usually via Cortana), controller vibrations (weapon fire and damage), as well as aural and visual.
I really don't see how they violated any of the said design principals. I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on it, though.
Oh yeah, that said, I bought Half-Life 2 and am currently installing it.

The only think I didn't like in Halo: Mappings
MAPPINGS define the relationship between controls and their actions. If a game uses "stick up" to duck, then you have a poor mapping. Poor mappings are difficult to memorize, forcing the user to pause and think about which button/stick does what action. The WASD key cluster is a good mapping system for forward/back/left/right. Likewise using the L and R triggers for "juke left" and "juke right" are good mappings -- it is easy to remember what controls correspond to which actions. There were old games that used to do crazy things like map D/F and J/K to left/right and up/down respectively -- mapping a horizonal key pair to a vertical action feels very wrong to most users. There have even been some relatively modern games that mapped a controller's stick to an on-screen character's relative direction -- so pushing up would move your character right if that character was facing to the right. While this may have made intellectual sense to those game designers, most players were exasperated by such schemes. Why? Because the mapping didn't feel right -- when you push left, what you're controlling on screen should move left relative to the player.
Syphon Filter was a user friendly game in controls
So was GTA
So was Time Crisis
So was Doom
So was Quake (uh.. sorta)
Unreal tournament, etc
On the other hand these weren't:
Any shooter from N64 (Exception : Golden Eye)
Or Halo...(No exception)
Was not... It took me an entire day to learn how to efficiently climb up a ladder!!!
I love the close range attack button though.
But otherwise, it didn't have controls that I could adapt to...
I'm not sure if it was the shape of the controller, the weight of the rumble pack or that I just plain suck. Whatever it was, I dont like the game and would rather play any other shooting game. In fact, I've watched some online parodies of this game online and it enhanced my discust further.
The N64 trigger leaves my hand uncomfortable and sore. What's the use of the damn D button in shooting games? Other than the "plenty" option in Goldeneye?
Maybe I'm just a hater? I dislike standard RPGs too.(Mario RPG is an exception... that was a beautiful game) My hope is that I can invent a game that can reach my level of expectations in what a good game is. Or become an exception to what a game of that genre should be.
With all these new hybrid games coming out, it's getting more and more difficult to label game genres.
And it gets harder and harder to get people to see things the way that I see them.

And what is a "D" button? I saw you mention one in your N64 rant.
I personally felt that most of the N64's shooters controlled well - Turok 1 was kinda out there with the control pad toggling walk/run, but aside from that it controlled quite well. Turok 2 felt much the same, expanding the left side of the controller for sniper mode. Now, the N64's controller wasn't that well designed with as far out as the left side is, but there's no denying that the developers got around that easily.
Serious damage to important body parts pretty much ruins any plans you had for living. Bummer.

I just played a 3 player game with my friend Josh and my brother Jason.
Jason lost horribly, me and Josh tied (I won one, he won one, that kinda thing). It was so awesome.
I love the sword... every FPS has to have a hard to use weapon that when used correctly is a one hit kill, like that sword.
<@Tixus> Anyway, I set the year to 1988 for some reason.

anyway, i like halo alot. i'm not saying it's the best shooter ever, but it's definately a great shooter with a nice plot and good cutscenes. there was a nice variety of weapons and the whack-the-enemy-upside-the-head move was always fun. i gotta say that the little short enemies always looked like alien munchkins akin to those from wizard of oz (needless to say, i loved killing them
i haven't gotten to play half-life or hl2, but i want to. while waiting with my youth symphony friends to go onstage, our concertmaster matt was counting down until hl2's release =)
i hate the n64's controller, mainly because there it doesn't make sense. my guess is that the developers were like "hey, we're 3d now, so we need a new and unique controller" and so they decided that, since they added another dimension, they should just add another part onto the controller so that you need 3 hands to operate it. i did like goldeneye, though...
blowing away 15 flood with the shotgun is so much fun =)
