I recently realized that the rules that we generally hold over image threads like Hillarious Pictures, which we have assumed to apply to all images, are not really officially thus, and at the very least are not very visible. This rule has been added to the Community Rules and Guidelines, as such:

Quote

7) Regarding images, hotlinking is strongly discouraged, because we don't want you stealing people's bandwidth, especially since there are websites out there that will go out of your way to replace your hotlink with obscene imagery. We highly recommend you upload any images you want to post to PhotoBucket or ImageShack or a similar service. If your image is replaced by something obscene, it will instantly be deleted, and will be subject to our rules regarding obscene material as if you had posted it yourself.
Also, any images you post are to be no larger than 800x600 in image size, or 500k in file size. Any posts that violate this rule will be deleted.

I'm still trying to decide whether the filesize restriction should apply to signatures, given that such an image tends to get cached and is only loaded once for an entire page, no matter how many times a person posts on that page. I'm looking at nashizzle's 1MB Lindsey Lohan gif, in particular, and given that no one has complained about it I guess it's okay, but universal use of similar signatures could cause problems. (30 posts per page, 30 people post, 30 megabytes of image data to load? We were trying to keep it down to 15 at the most.)

"Oh, and also racism."
To lie is to change the truth.
..Ignorance is to be unaware of the truth.
....Incompetence is to be unable to grasp the truth.
......And escape is to run away from the truth.
It is useless to run, since the truth is right next to you.

I assume the 500k/800x600 rule only applies to embedded (not linked) images?

Hmm, what would happen if you linked to an image but the host is a jackass and decides to replace it with some obscene image?

The linked image would still be on imageshack or whatever - like with posting an embedded image, you still wouldn't hotlink it.

hey, i just discovered something really cool! i accidentally dragged the fast reply button into the text window and it put the javascript and name in the text! cool!

anyway, back on track.
fair enough. the 500k might be somewhat limiting, but not too bad. i suppose if you just use png it shouldn't be much of a problem.
i'll try to remember to start uploading things to imageshack.
<Tox> bah. I may as well give in and shop australia. D:
<pyro1588> "welcome to australia, can i help you find what you're looking for?"
<Tox> pyro1588, I'm giving you the most reproachful of glares right now.

500k isn't that bad. JPG compression will usually take an 800x600 file and knock it down to about 200k, I think; somewhere around there anyway...I have no complaints about this rule. So long as knowledge of Imageshack is spread around enough, I don't see any major problems resulting unless people just ignore all the links being tossed around.
Blaugh!
Serious damage to important body parts pretty much ruins any plans you had for living. Bummer.

Well, it depends what level of compression you set, but getting any JPEG image down to <500k is easy anyway. Don't use PNG for photorealistic or similar images, that's just wasting space.

Why on earth would you need to embed a 500KB image? If an image is really that detailed that it needs high compression and/or a high resolution it should be linked, or a small thumbnail should be provided.

It displays the link properties and text for every link on the page. :(

Animated GIFs for one. They don't compress too well. We need an animated JPG format. :(

Lancer is right though. JPEGs below 500KB are extremely easy. Most of the time I've got images around 64K using 25 to 75 percent compression.
