This game is an example of an extraordinary game being born from an otherwise not-particularly memorable series. In Ruin Diver III, you play as one of several characters as you attempt to reach the bottom of the ruins as fast as you can collecting whatever treasure you can find, avoiding deadly traps, and trying not to die in general. Another thing that sets this game aside from many other MegaZeux games: this game is genuinely and brutally balls-to-the-wall hard.

Every character in Ruin Diver III has different attributes that help them during the game. The Valkyrie, probably the absolute easiest character to beat the game with, has a mace that she can spin around to make he slowly float downward, especially useful for scaling the game's numerous side rooms; the Guru starts with several protective shields and can lay traps; the Knowledge Fairie, who sounds easy at first because she can fly, has no attacks and can not use shields at all; the Ninjette can climb walls. There are a handful of other characters, too.

Ruin Diver III has several gameplay modes to offer: Normal, Ridiculous, Easy, and Ascent. The first three all all very similar, but are appropriately balanced to their respective difficulty levels, give or take a 'REALLY FREAKING HARD' prefix. Ascent mode is only playable as the Fairie or the Ninjette, as they are the only characters that can reasonably scale the heights required in Ascent mode. The goal (obviously) is to climb up a shaft rather than descend to the bottom, and it's probably about as hard as the other three modes combined. All modes are an exercise in keeping track of everything going on around you, so if you're not used to the game, feel free to take your time descending/ascending.

On the topic of the difficulty, yes, you will die a lot, but this game is much kinder than similar games and allows you to restart from a fresh level with the press of a button less than a second after your death without tooting its own horn about the fact you died, which is something that can not be said for many other games.

Overall, Ruin Diver III is a very professionally crafted game that will make you want to learn how to be good at it and award you for doing so. Make sure you explore the side rooms while you're descending! And no, I didn't just give this game a 5 because KKairos included a track I made

This game is as difficult as enjoyable.
The premise is simple: reach the bottom of the dungeon to acquire a generic book-of-wisdom, your descent being hampered by enemies/traps/vines/falling-blocks.

A lot of effort has been put on the levels: it seems they are procedurally generated, nontheless they feel quite unique and every time you have to devise a different strategy to avoid/beat the hazards. Same with the playable characters: each of them is unique and make descending tactics a new whole thing from game to game.

The whole package is very balanced. I advise new players *not* to treat this as a jump and run, but more as a game of nethack: take your time to check the surrounding and then act swiftly.

Thumbs up!
