Newyear Dualstream Day of Zeux Q4 2002 Judging Sheet:Thundercloud

From MZXWiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search
Okay, first of all, DISQUALIFICATIONS.

#1: 44192. Reason: Now, when they say to leave your entry ANONYMOUS,
OBVIOUSLY they meant SPLASH IT ABOUT RIGHT LEFT AND CENTRE, ISN'T THAT RIGHT
<s>CLOWD</s>CLOWN.

#2: 26513. Reason: STEALING FROM XENOGENESIS IS BAD :(

#3: 8796. Reason: IT PAINS ME TO DO SO, BUT WE KNOW WHO DID THIS, SEEING AS
HE DID THE SAME GAME LAST TIME ROUND :(

#4: 30275. Reason: WTF? This has nothing to do with the topics at all!

#5: 48493. Reason: The Thundercloud dictionary describes a MZX game as
"having more than just a title screen". Hint hint.

Okay, now that we've got all those clowns (WITH THE EXCEPTION OF 8796) out
of the way, it's time to get down to the proper judging. These are in
numerical order. (And yes, I'm still marking the DQ's)

Note: Only the non-disqualified entries are ranked.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

1871: Trinity.

Gameplay: 5/65. Comment: This game was let down greatly by it's bugs, which
were many. It was unfinished as well, and much of the game was unplayable.
Also, there were too many battles. It was like a battle every three steps,
which became EXTREMELY ANNOYING ><

Graphics: 47/50. Comment: DUDE, These graphics rocked! There were some
glitches, with glowing things in places they shouldn't be, but overall they
were DA BOMB.

Plot: 15/50. Comment: Not much plot to go on. There was a nice background to
the game, and there was a sort of character involvement, so that gives it
some marks.

Theme: 3/45. Comment: There was no theme to this at all, apart from the
picture of the planets at the start. I believe that alone stopped this entry
from being disqualified.

Innovation: 20/30. Comment: Seems a bit like it's all been done before. The
whole war between two planets, and a third planet being dragged into it
seems a bit like it's been done before, but I may be wrong. Still, there
were some original points to this game, such as the battle engine, the likes
of which I personally haven't seen before.

Discretion: 10/15. Comment: I thought this game would have been appropriate
for the topic if it had been completed. However, I can see where the effort
went in, and I'm deciding to award 10 marks, just because I can see that
these people have tried, even though it didn't come out as expected.

Music: 20/30. Comment: I liked some of this music. Some of it was fresh, and
I hadn't heard it before. However, some of it was old and boring to my ears,
So that lets down the music score a bit.

Sound effects: 0/5. Comment: There were none. This game could have been
improved by the addition of at least one sound effect.

Combined score: 120/300.

Rank: 3.

Comment: When I saw this game I had high hopes, but they were dashed. Better
luck next time.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

8796: FINAL FANTASY XXX.

Gameplay: 30/65. Comment: THIS GAME WAS VERY VERY GOOD. HARDLY ANY BUGS AT
ALL, BUT IT WAS TOO REPETITIVE FOR MY LIKING :(

Graphics: 3/50. Comment: THEY WERE BETTER THAN CAVERNS, LET'S PUT IT THAT
WAY.

Plot: 10/50. Comment: THE PLOT WAS RIPPED FROM SEVERAL FINAL FANTASY GAME,
BUT I FIND THE WAY IN WHICH IT'S AMALGATED INTERESTING, SO I GIVE 10.

Theme: 20/45. Comment: WELL THEY DID MENTION EQUILIBRIUM ONCE OR TWICE, AND
THE PLOT WITH THE CRYSTALS WAS SORT OF RELATED TO IT. MEH.

Innovation: 0/40. Comment: THE PLOT WAS RIPPED :( ALSO, I REMEMBER A SIMILAR
GAME LAST YEAR... FINAL FANTASY XXX I BELIEVE IT WAS CALLED.

Discretion: 11/15. Comment: DUDE, THIS GAME WAS VERY VERY FUNNY. IT WAS
NOTHING BUT FUNNY.

Music: 5/30. Comment: THE MUSIC WAS VERY ANNOYING AND REPETITIVE :(

Sound: 1/. Comment: WHAT SOUND? I'M GIVING THIS ENTRY ONE POINT, BECAUSE ANY
USE OF SOUNDS WOULD HAVE BLOWN MY MIND :(

Combined Score: 80/300. (DISQUALIFIED)

Comment: LIKE WOW. GET RID OF EVERYTHING BUT THE HUMOUR AND DAMN THAT'S A
GOOD GAME.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

26513: Medecine run.

Gameplay: 2/65. Comment: This game was boring, repetitive and monotonous. I
really couldn't stand it.

Graphics: 2/50. Comment: There was SOME animation, but overall they were
crappy. This entry would have got a higher mark for the wave effect at the
end BUT THEY STOLE IT SO NO POINTS. BAD TEAM! BAD!

Plot: 5/50. Comment: There was a MINIMAL PLOT, but it sucked :P

Theme: 15/45. Comment: They stuck to the theme, but it was shallow and
boring, and overdone. TAKE SOMEONE SOME MEDICINE... BAD.

Innovation: 0/40. Comment: Been there, done that, got the t-shirt and burned
it.

Discretion: 2/15. Comment: I'm giving them two marks because I feel sorry
for this team.

Music: 0/30. Comment: OUR SURVEY SAYS: NUH UH.

Sound: 1/5. Comment: Adlib sounds. Ech.

Combined Score: 27/300.

Comment: 5UX0RZ. Try harder. (DISQUALIFIED)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

27523: TITLE.

Gameplay: 2/65. Comment: Like the previous entry, this game was boring,
repetitive and monotonous. It was awful.

Graphics: 10/50. Comments: Well they did try to do some good graphics, i'll
put it like that. But, no special effects, which would have improved their
mark.

Plot: 5/50. Comment: Sucky plot, which was basically the same as the last
entry, but using only one board.

Theme: 15/45. Comment: DUDE, THIS IS EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE LAST GAME! ><

Innovation: 0/40. Comment: OH GOOD! ANOTHER KILL EVERYONE GAME! YAY!

Discretion: 0/15. Comment: This was way too awful for my tastes, and I'm
sure that parents would try to lynch the maker of this game if they saw
their little child playing it. It's like 2D Doom, but with way too much
gore.

Music: 0/30. Comment: The similarities between this game at 26513 are
astounding, DID YOU KNOW THAT!? THIS ONE HAS NO MUSIC AS WELL!

Sound: 0/5. Comment: AND THIS ONE EVEN HAS NO SOUND IN IT!

Combined Score: 32/300.

Rank: 7

Comment: Bad. Very very very very bad. Try harder, and see a psychiatrist,
you sick fool(s)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

30275: FAILED.

Gameplay: 0/65. Comment: There was NONE.

Graphics: 15/50. Comment: Ooh, nice and animated player, but nothing else
was good.

Plot: 0/50. Comment: There was NONE.

Theme: 0/45. Comment: There was NONE.

Innovation: 5/40. Comment: If developed into a proper game, I can see that
player becoming useful.

Discretion: 2/15. Comment: I feel sorry for this team, so they get 2 points
as well.

Music: 0/30. Comment: There was NONE.

Sound: 0/5. Comment: THERE WAS NONE ><.

Combined Score: 22/300.

Comment: FAIL. (DISQUALIFIED)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

32335: Panacea.

Gameplay: 20/65. Comment: Well, there was some gameplay in it, although most
of it was quite repetitive. The having to rob a bank thing was quite nice,
although it would have been better if you could have actually robbed it, and
not have a computer driven script :P

Graphics: 20/50. Comment: This game was mixed really. At times, it used it's
own art, some of which was quite nice, but in other times it was just
rubbish really, with the sort of art rivalling caverns (Especially that boss
fight)

Plot: 25/50. Comment: Well the plot was THERE, but it all seemed a bit too
similar. Girl is dying, go to find miracle cure in a godforsaken place
humanity hasn't been for centuries... meh, I've seen it all before.

Theme: 35/45. Comment: Wheefun. This thing stuck to the topic, and in a way
I haven't seen done that many times, unlike SOME GAMES I DON'T CARE TO
MENTION.

Innovation: 15/40. Comment: Well, as I said, it's all been done before. The
whole find a miracle cure thing, the whole girl dying thing. It's not really
adding anything new.

Discretion: 7/15. Comment: After some of the poorer games in the DoZ, this
one isn't half bad, so it gets just about half marks in the discretion
category.

Music: 10/30. Comment: Well it was there, but it was all ripped, and it was
ALL stuff I'd heard before.

Sound: 2/5. Comment: WTF? Why the hell have we got gunshot sounds when two
people are punching each other? IT MAKES NO SENSE!

Combined Score: 134/300.

Rank: 4

Comment: There were some bad points, but then again, it wasn't exactly the
worst game there... well at least it didn't have many bugs.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

37701: Larry The Junkie.

Gameplay: 30/65. Comment: Heh, this game had quite a bit of leet gameplay,
and I especially loved the mini-game. Some of it was a bit too monotonous
for my liking though. And also, there were a few big ANNOYING BUGS,
especially the one where if you pressed space and you weren't talking to
someone, space never worked again on that screen.

Graphics: 30/50. Comment: Well I loved some of these graphics. Especially
Larry, whos animation I thought rocked this world. Still, it could have done
with some improvement, like trying to make the background appear less tiled
(like on the moon), and also, some of the duplicates of the player on some
screens were annoying.

Plot: 30/50. Comment: The plot was crystal clear, had a few unexpected
changes, and was funny at times, which I loved.

Theme: 32/45. Comment: Duuude. This game stuck to the theme fairly well, and
even had a few twists, but still adhered to the theme. Well done!.

Innovation: 20/40. Comment: The characters were expertly done, which I feel
adds a new way of style to the MZX catalogue. However, the whole "STFU
NEWBIE" thing has been done a bit too much.

Discretion: 10/15. Comment: I loved this game's humour. I wish it could have
lasted longer. Especially the mini-game :)

Music: 20/30. Comment: The music was fresh and new to me in places, but that
Fletch tune has got to be one of the most used mods in the history of my MZX
career. The only ways they could have improved it was to get rid of fletch
and possibly compose some of their own.

Sound: 3/5. Comment: Sound was used, and the effects that I heard were good,
but it was a bit too sparse for my liking.

Combined Score: 175/300.

Rank: 2.

Comment: Wow, this game is leet :P

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

41192: Revival!

Gameplay: 5/65. Comment: AUGH, This game was BORING to the extreme. There
were no challenges when it came to the puzzles, and it was just *snore*

Graphics: 1/50. Comment: OH NO. These are some of the worst graphics I've
ever seen. They're not even on par with caverns!

Plot: 15/50. Comment: Mweh. It was there, and it wasn't the same as some
other people's plots, but it's a bit unbelievable. If they live in such a
modern age, why the hell do I have to go out looking for a cure!? DON'T THEY
HAVE SOME KIND OF SUPER-ANTIBIOTICS!?

Theme: 20/45. Comment: Well it stuck to the topic, but it was done in a sort
of Monkey Island way, which does earn it SOME gratification... just not
much, because I still think the plot sucked.

Innovation: 0/45. Comment: IT'S LIKE A CROSS BETWEEN CAVERNS AND MONKEY
ISLAND.

Discretion: 0/15. Comment: This game gets no discretion marks, simply
because I can't believe anyone is dumb enough to splash their name all
across a DoZ entry, which is supposed to be anonymous.

Music: 0/30. Comment: There was NONE.

Sound: 1/5. Comment: Adlib sounds. Ech.

Combined Score: 42/300. (DISQUALIFIED)

Comment: TRY HARDER, CLOWD.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

47506: Crisis in Stuffyou City.

Gameplay: 50/65. Comment: OMFG, this game rocked! All of the challenges in
them were bug free, fun and challenging. However, I couldn't help thinking
that there could have been more.

Graphics: 45/50. Comment: Yessir, this game had leet graphics! And the use
of sprites was fantastic as well. My hat goes off to these people, for
having the second best graphics in the DoZ according to myself.

Plot: 40/50. Comment: Yes, it was there, Yes, it was original, YES, IT WAS
FUNNY! Only problem is that it was a little too far fetched.

Theme: 35/45. Comment: This stuck to the medicine theme really really well,
and turned a boring run to find a cure into an exciting trample through a
proverbial rose bed. EXCITING :)

Innovation: 30/45. Comment: All three of the games made excellent use of
sprites, a feature which I haven't seen used in megazeux that often, and
they all worked fantastically, and so it adds something wonderful and new,
and proves that sprites work really really well!

Discretion: 13/45. Comment: Dude, this game is one of the funniest I have
ever played, and it's humour like that that gives this team BONUS POINTS
*CHACHING, CASHBACK!*

Music: 25/30. Comment: The music was all fresh and new, probably composed by
the team themselves. However, it really did sound too much like a megaman
game, and I could definitely hear some of the megaman stuff in there.

Sound: 3/5. Comment: Well the sounds were there, and they were good, but
they were a bit too sparse :(

Combined Score: 241/300.

Rank: 1.

Comment: Easily the best game in the DoZ.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

48493: Flame of Revok.

Gameplay: 0/65. Comment: NONE.

Graphics: 5/50. Comment: Meh, what was there was okay I guess.

Plot: 0/50. Comment: NONE.

Theme: 2/45. Comment: Well the word "Medicine" was there.

Innovation: 0/45. Comment: None.

Discretion: 0/45. Comment: A title screen... WOO! </sarcasm>

Music: 0/30. Comment: None.

Sound: 0/5. Comment: None.

Combined Score: 7/300. (DISQUALIFIED)

Comment: You reap what you sow.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

51929: The Herb of Tridia.

Gameplay: 35/65. Comment: It was there, but it was a bit too much of a big
ol' hack 'n' slash for me. Plus, no boss fight. LAME :(

Graphics: 30/50. Comment: Some of these graphics were really nice,
especially the laboratory, but overall, they could have done with a bit more
touching up (nmiaow).

Plot: 5/50. Comment: It was there, but it was silly. "YOUR REIGN OF TERROR
IS ABOUT TO END!"... What reign of terror? "LOOKS LIKE ANOTHER SOUL FOR THE
TAKING" "NEVAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRR!!!!" "WTF?" "EYE AM STRNOGR DUE 2 TEH
SOLES"... wow, isn't that original? Sounds like Dragonball Z but with less
leetness. :P

Theme: 20/45. Comment: Well it stuck to the theme okay, but it really felt
like it had been done over and over and over.

Innovation: 5/45. Comment: Well it didn't really add anything new, so I
can't really award that many points for this category.

Discretion: 5/15. Comment: I'm giving this entry five points, because they
tried so hard to make a good plot... but they failed. I was actually
laughing when the "NEVEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!" part came about.
That's how bad the plot was! :D

Music: 20/30. Comment: It was there, and some of it was quite good, but I
feel the music for the room with the herb wasn't as good as it could have
been. They should have selected a better tune.

Sound: 4/5. Comment: They actually used quite a lot of sound! Kudos to them!

Combined Score: 124/300.

Rank: 6

Comment: Well it really could have been better, I'll say that, but still, it
was okay.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

64966: 64966.

Gameplay: 7/65. Comments: This game sucked majorly. I couldn't kill a single
monster, and the magic system was appalling. What a waste of a good idea.

Graphics: 20/50. Comments: Not really that good to be honest. The animation
wasn't that good, and the floor and characters lacked detail.

Plot: 20/50. Comments: The plot was there alright, but it wasn't that good.
The backstory gains it some extra marks, and I especially liked the
descriptive dialogue, but apart from that it was pretty damn sucky, with a
plot twist that sucked.

Theme: 27/45. Comments: It stuck to the theme pretty well, and the idea was
original in some ways, but still, the overall ending was pretty damn
rubbish.

Innovation: 5/45. Comments: If they had bothered to make the magic system
work properly, this could have given them more innovation points, especially
in the lightning whip section :P

Discretion: 4/15. Comments: I'm giving them SOME points because they used
magic, and they're the only team in the DoZ that haven't been disqualified
that has used magic.

Music: 0/30. Comments: LALALALALA NO MUSIC :(

Sound: 0/5. Comment: LALALALALA NO SOUND :(

Combined Score: 83/300.

Rank: 5.

Comment: UR M4J1CK5 FAILED.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

And that concludes the judging. Let's hope I've done this right :P

Yours Judgingly,
Thundercloud.
