Summer Dualstream Day of Zeux 2001 Judging Sheets:wizdom
Day of Zeux, judges' results form ================================= Judge: wizdom Date judged: 11th July 2001 (from between 1630 and 2000 hours) ================================= Scoring Categories, reiterated: Category Points Percentage Theme 30 24% Gameplay 25 20% Plot 20 16% Originality 20 16% Graphics 15 12% Music 10 8% Sound 5 4% In the judge's opinion, there should have<br> been only five to six categories, not the<br> aforementioned seven. Finally, the<br> weighting on graphics was probably not<br> heavy enough, and theme was rated too<br> highly (IMO).
=================================
Now, to the judging.
DoZ(-57) Phoenix Reborn
=================================
Fore note
---------
The inclusion of two megazeux worlds was
initially confusing. If there was a
packaging category, they'd be marked down ;)
Theme : 15
-----
Seemed initially adherent to the General
topic set, 'Rebirth'. Title says it all,
pretty much maintained throughout.
Gameplay : 0
--------
Frankly, the initial bugs were slightly
irritating. For example, if you die
after watching the intro screen (apparently
it's impossible not to, but I was scribbling,
heh), then it restarts - nice touch -
but something cripples the subsequent
initialisation. Game deadski. As I really
couldn't play this game, and shouldn't have
to edit it as I subsequently did, I can't
award any marks in this area.
Plot : 10
DoZ style plot, nothing wonderful. Not exactly
gripping, but at least it's there in this game.
Originality : 6
-----------
Nothing spiffy. The bosses were under par.
Graphics : 8
--------
If the font was drawn by hand, which I'm
assuming it was, I'm impressed. Readable and
attractive. I liked the bold type. OK, so black
is the basic default colour, but the intro
screen pretty much stank of it. The game itself
featured modest gradients and basic use of tone
throughout, better than nothing. Use of
MegaZeux's dialogs was nothing exceptional,
but the provided function was adequate. The
introduction was bare and not particularly
appealing. Fades, gradients and use of tone made
this a reasonably graphic-y game. Noice.
Music : 8
-----
Very, very atmospheric. Use of ambient
electronic-esk music was well suited and pretty
much appreciated. I think the people/person
that made this game are Deus Ex fans. The music
just... sounds like Deus Ex's. :D
Sound : 4
-----
Samples were there, placed well enough, I guess.
I wonder how you get three in this area? Crap
sounds?
Bugs let this game down.

=================================
DoZ(-77) The Second Chance
=================================
Theme : 24
-----
A very dominant theme. I liked it. Right from
the long winded introduction to the "bloody" end,
a humorous and reasonably well themed piece.
Gameplay : 18
--------
This was nothing special, a pretty simple game.
Since it was easy to complete, and largely without
bugs, I'd say it played smoothly, if not well. The
only problem I *really* encountered was the silly
method of accessing the inventory. Once I'd got
myself inside the damn thing, I kept pressing "i"
again, thus screwing up the whole game.
Originality : 16
-----------
Really quite original. I liked the inventory (because
it worked, whoohoo) and the world map idea was OK.
Plot : 12
Quite fun, but really too basic. It was all revealed
in the introduction, leaving little to be worked out
upon your "rebirth".
Graphics : 7
--------
</strike>WARNING: INTRO RIPPED FROM HONOR
QUEST SE.</strike> OK, so the introductory message
wasn't absolutely fabulous, but sufficed. The world
map interface thing wasn't really that well constructed
and the dock area was horrid.
Music : 5
-----
..what? Oh, uhh, OK, I guess.
Sound : 3
-----
(whoohoo, used the three..) Mediocre.
Pretty damn cool. Funny. Lotsa stuff.

DoZ(027) Impact
=================================
Theme : 30
-----
..I don't think the validity and sincerity of this game
is in question. The plot was clear throughout, interesting
and traditional in the sense that I'd read into it before.
The deviations from the rebirth scenario were few, and the
idea of awake, sleep and a simulated conscious was well
crafted and made an interesting swerve from the general
route taken by most.
Gameplay : 22
--------
Very playable, few, if any, bugs. I was satisfied. I
especially enjoyed reading the dialogue, and the
cinematics weren't too long between battles and
roaming, but there was probably too much emphasis made
on battling and/or cinematics.
Plot : 17
I've read a few books that go over similar ground, but
not with the same twists and thrilling turns this game
takes. Building on an essentially ideal plot was a wise
idea.
Originality : 18
-----------
Reasonably original. RPG style battles are, IMO, a tad
repetitive, but the battles weren't too difficult and the
engines used were flawless. Reminds me of a recently
discontinued MZX project, though...
Graphics : 15
--------
Utterly stunning. Everything from the title screen, to the
introductory sequence, to the game itself was excellently
plotted, amalgamated and mixed. Awesome job, entirely
effective and extremely eye catching (that planet in the
intro has to be some of the best under-pressure MZX art
I've ever viewed, kudos to the artist).
Music : 7
-----
Superb. I doubt it's original, but clinky tunes well
suited to the different bits of the games. Nice
transistions.
Sound : 0
-----
No sound effects or transistional effects. Poor.
A rather entertaining and well debugged game. Excellent
graphics, simply excellent.

DoZ(242) Local Nastiness
=================================
Theme : 18
-----
..what?
Gameplay : 10
--------
Few deviations from the norm, simplistic and not exactly
colourful.
Plot : 5
Lacking.
Originality : 5
-----------
Not really original. I've seen games like this a zillion
times.
Plot : 7
Limited plot, nice intro.
Graphics : 4
--------
.. a char and pal set mod, and a single char player. Not
exactly inventive in any sense. Black dominates. Black.
Arrgh!!
Music : 9
-----
Good. Atmospheric and melodic.
Sound : 5
-----
Excellent sound effects. Probably ripped, but sensibly
positioned throughout.
Mediocre game all round. Good sound and music, though.

DoZ(311) Tomatoes
=================================
Theme : 28
-----
Flawless. You just kill those goddamn plants. Yeehaa!
Gameplay : 18
--------
OK, so it's limited, but I like! VERY nicely implemented
vertical shooter, would be a good mini-game for something
else.
Plot : 2
There was a plot? Oh yeah, kill those plants. Yeehaa!
Originality : 20
-----------
Full credit. This was a lovely experiment, I thoroughly
enjoyed playing this. The graphics, the implementation..
the breath of fresh air! Shockingly original.
Graphics : 10
--------
Poor in game graphics, but the bits in-between were really,
really good.
Music : 5
-----
One track..?!
Sound : 2
-----
A single sample, nothing special.
Neato.

Gameplay : 9

OK, you could move and progress and stuff.
Bugz0rs.
Plot : 15
Yeah, it was there.
Originality : 17
-----------
Gurgle, a platformer. Coolz0rs.
Graphics : 4
--------
Lacking. The intro was OK, but the unchanged font
and basic motif just didn't cut it.
Music : 7
-----
The music was quite cool.
Sound : 5

It was all there.
Yeah. The sum of its parts.

Plot : 20
Established, entertaining, cool.
Originality: 15

Quite so, the puzzles were neat.
Graphics : 10
--------
I liked the isometric stuff and the cinematics.
Music : 10

Pretty nice game, neat plot, less good gameplay.

Interesting idea, I like the idea of "dynamic"

doesn't give this the edge. Or any edges. The sphere
of edge cutting technology.
